What makes a skilful adjustment?

Most people think hands-on adjustments are about where to put your hands.

I think that’s just one piece of the puzzle.

Observation. Communication. Consent. Touch. Judgement.

That’s exactly what we’ll be exploring at my Hands-On Adjustments Workshop in London this September.

If you’d like to feel more confident, thoughtful and skilful when working with students, I’d love you to join us.

Students are incredibly polite. They often don't want to make a fuss or interrupt the class.

If an adjustment feels uncomfortable, they may not say anything at all.

Instead, they simply don't come back, and as a teacher you're none the wiser.

That completely changed the way I think about hands-on adjustments.

It's one of the reasons I spend so much time talking about consent, communication and reading the person in front of you, not just the pose.

We often think of cueing as adding something helpful.

But every cue also takes something away.

The moment you draw a student's attention to one part of their experience, they're less likely to notice something else. That isn't a reason to say less-it's a reminder to choose our words with care.

Good teaching isn't about filling every moment with instructions. Sometimes it's about knowing which one thing matters most right now.

As teachers, we often focus on how to adjust. But perhaps the more important question is: How do we help a student feel safe enough to receive an adjustment?

Without trust, even a technically perfect adjustment can feel intrusive.
With trust, a very simple adjustment can make all the difference.

The title of this carousel is deliberately provocative.

Not every adjustment fails before you touch a student. But many of the adjustments that don't have the effect we hoped for have very little to do with our hands.

Often the real issue is something we didn't notice first: their breath, their confidence, their balance, their understanding of the pose or simply what they needed in that moment.

Observation comes before action. The better we understand what we're seeing, the better our decisions become.

As teachers we've all done it. Seen something that could be "improved" and instinctively jumped in. But timing matters.

A good adjustment isn't just about where your hands go. It's about whether that student is ready to receive them.

Sometimes the best adjustment is the one you don't give.

One of the hardest lessons to learn as a yoga teacher is that helping isn't always the same as intervening.

Sometimes our instinct is to offer another cue, another hands-on adjustment or another explanation. But if we step in too quickly, we can take away the student's opportunity to explore, notice and learn for themselves.

Knowing when not to adjust is just as important as knowing how to adjust.

Every yoga teacher has seen it.

You place your hands...

Their shoulders soften.

Their breath changes.

They let out that little sigh.

It can feel like magic.

But it usually isn't.

It's observation. Timing. Knowing what the student needs, and sometimes knowing when not to adjust.

That's exactly what we'll be exploring at my Hands-on Adjustments Workshop in London on 5 September.
