Cemetery Database Project update: Over 14,000 names!

The project to preserve records on our ancestors in Cyprus, Transcriptions from the latest visits now total to over 14,000 names on the database with many cemeteries still to be transcribed!

Some of the most recent cemeteries to be added include:
Polemia - Nicosia
Kolossi Ay. Loukas - Limassol
Kolossi Ay. Marinas - Limassol
Tersefanou - Larnaca
Avdellero - Larnaca
Fasoula - Limassol
Nisou - Nicosia
Constantinos & Eleni cemetery - Nicosia (over a 1000 names so far - many more to be captured - will require more than one trip due to size!).

I also have a domain registered for a website to be set up hopefully next year for people to access and continue their Cypriot family history research with - Updates for this will come in the future. 🧿🧿

Reason #341 why taking Ancestry transcriptions at face value is always a gamble - always look at the image too! This was the correct record I was looking for - I might have ignored it based on the father's name being transcribed as James when it is, in fact, Thomas.

A quick reminder of what Genealogists often face when studying parish registers - especially from the 16th and 17th century.... and this was one of the better pages! - many were noted as being glued together & illegible in this parish register for Pulham St Mary Magdalene in Norfolk.

The Society of Genealogists is now inviting speaker submissions for All About That Place 2026, the much-loved virtual event celebrating place, community and family history research.

Running from 7–16 October 2026, this unique online event brings together researchers, historians, genealogists, archivists and heritage enthusiasts for a series of short, engaging talks designed to inspire and educate.

We are looking for 10-minute presentations on a wide range of topics, including:
• One-place studies
• Local and community history
• Maps and landscapes
• Archives and records
• Family and social history
• Research methods and tools
• Creative projects and storytelling
• Heritage, preservation and public history

Whether you are an experienced speaker or sharing your research for the first time, we warmly encourage submissions from across the family and local history community.

✨ Last year’s event reached thousands of viewers worldwide and showcased over 100 bite-sized talks from passionate speakers across the heritage sector.

Today I gave a talk at the Spring Study Day for AGRA - Association of Genealogists & Researchers in Archives with the theme of Community and Landscapes. Such a great event and very enjoyable talks by Gill Blanchard and Dave Annal as well as an amazing talk and display from Yaye and Alice at the Cambridgeshire Archives Service. My talk was based on my Dissertation about Mary Barbour and the 1915 Rent Control Act. I do love what I do!

I'm an absolute fangirl for Heraldry - what beautiful arms found by Nicola Johnson and SoG have some amazing examples of this. All About Ancestors Society of Genealogists

I’ve spent some time recently lost in the incredible collections at the Society of Genealogists in London. 📚✨

One of the highlights has been the stunning examples of heraldry in the older volumes. It’s like a secret code to the past! While I have to laugh at some of the 19th-century genealogists who tried to link families back to ancient monarchs (or even to God!), the artistry of the heraldic shields they created is just beautiful. 🛡️

I first properly fell in love with this 'code' during my Master’s in Genealogical, Palaeographic & Heraldic Studies at the University of Strathclyde - it was easily one of my favourite parts of the course.
