Not every sore heel is plantar fasciitis. 🤔
A podiatrist we trained with reckons there are 40-odd different heel pains that all get called the same thing. These are the ones we check for most often:
• A thinned heel fat pad — a deep, bruise-like ache right in the centre of the heel
• An irritated bursa ("policeman's heel") — more constant, doesn't ease as you warm up
• The tibialis posterior tendon — the arch-holding tendon; pain on the inside of the ankle. This is the most common misdiagnosis we see.
• The Achilles — plenty of people say "plantar fasciitis" then point to the back of the heel
• An irritated nerve — burning, tingling, or pain at rest
Each of these needs a different plan. Which is exactly why we assess before we treat.
