We’re proud to support the OurJay Foundation as our own Mark Farrar heads to Westminster with the team to raise awareness of Jamie’s Law.

The campaign is calling for every police vehicle in the UK to carry a defibrillator.

OurJay was set up in memory of 18-year-old Jamie Rees, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest in 2022. His family have since worked tirelessly to improve access to defibrillators and help prevent other families facing the same devastating loss.

With police often among the first on scene, having a defibrillator in every vehicle could help save precious time when every second counts.

Got a quiet moment between your holidays this summer?

Use it to refresh your CPR knowledge of the steps to take if someone is in cardiac arrest.

👉 Check your surroundings
Your safety comes first.

Before approaching the person, make sure the area is safe. Shout for help and gently shake their shoulders to check for a response.

👉 Call 999
You don't have to face a cardiac arrest alone.

Call 999 and tell them you are with someone who is not responding. The call handler will help you check for signs of life.

👉 Check breathing
Knowing what to look for can save a life.

Look, listen, and feel for signs of normal breathing. Can you see their chest rising
and falling?

👉 Chest compressions
When the heart stops, every second counts.

If the person is not breathing or not breathing normally, begin CPR. The call handler will take you through what to do.

👉 Get a defibrillator
A defibrillator can make all the difference.

The call handler will direct you to your nearest registered defibrillator. Do not leave the person if you are on your own.

👉 Use the defibrillator
Don't be afraid.

The defibrillator will use voice prompts to tell you exactly what to do. You don't need training to use a defibrillator.

👉 Continue CPR
Every compression counts.

Continue chest compressions and follow the defibrillator's prompts. Keep going until help takes over or the person starts breathing normally.

Every student should leave school with the confidence to save a life.

CPR is a skill that takes just a few hours to learn, but it could make all the difference in an emergency.

With around 80% of cardiac arrests happening at home, the person who needs help most could be someone you know and love.

The Resuscitation Council UK has created free resources to help secondary schools teach CPR, making it easier than ever for educators to equip young people with this life-saving skill.

If you're a teacher, school leader, or work in education, it's well worth taking a look.
