🍃 Tuesday Slow Play | The House That Cardboard Built

Sometimes the most meaningful invitations to play begin with a box waiting to be noticed.

Today, a recycled TV box became an architectural studio, a window into observation, and eventually, a playhouse imagined by little hands. Rather than showing Scarlett what to make, I followed her ideas as she explored shape, light, texture and perspective. Every piece of cardboard became a possibility.

In the spirit of Reggio Emilia, recycled materials are not “leftovers”—they are languages for thinking. Through designing, testing, rebuilding and observing the changing light through handmade windows, she wasn’t simply crafting a house; she was constructing theories about space, transparency and belonging.

✨ Slow play reminds us that imagination doesn’t need more toys—it needs more time.

Hello lovely families,
This week we’ve been embracing slow, Reggio-inspired moments along the Scottish canal with nothing more than a small storage box (or an empty egg carton) to create our own tiny nature collection.
Each compartment became a space for a new discovery—feathers, petals, seeds, grasses, tiny stones and leaves—inviting us to slow down, notice and wonder together.

🌸 Why do you think this grows here?
🐝 Who might use this plant as a home or food?
💧 How has the canal helped shape this place?
🎨 What colours, textures and patterns can you find?

There are no right answers—just conversations, curiosity and connection with the world around us.

📮 Keeping the wee Ritual’s Alive 📮

Today we posted a card to a friend.

In a world of instant messages and emojis, there is something wonderfully slow and intentional about walking to the post box, carefully posting an envelope, and imagining the journey it will take before it reaches someone you care about.

From a Reggio Emilia perspective, these everyday rituals are rich with meaning. They help children understand connection, communication, community and belonging. A simple red post box becomes more than an object—it becomes part of a story about kindness, waiting, anticipation and caring for others.

Some traditions are worth keeping alive.

Do you still send handwritten letters or cards? Who was the last person you wrote to? ❤️📮
