One thing that surprises people in clinic...

Many people arrive expecting me to focus entirely on the area that hurts. If their shoulder is sore they expect the shoulder to be the centre of attention. If their lower back is painful they assume that is where all the answers will be found.

What often surprises them is how frequently the body works as a team. A shoulder problem can be influenced by the upper back and ribcage. A sore knee may be affected by what is happening at the hip or foot. That does not mean the painful area is unimportant. It simply means that symptoms are not always the whole story.

One of the reasons I enjoy Osteopathy is that it encourages us to look at the bigger picture rather than focusing on one isolated part of the body. Sometimes understanding why something has become overloaded is just as important as treating the symptoms themselves.

Some babies with a high palate struggle more with feeding than people realise

A high palate means the roof of the mouth is more deeply arched which can make it harder for some babies to get a comfortable seal during feeding. You might notice clicking noises, more gulping of air, frequent winding or feeds that feel surprisingly messy despite trying different positions or bottles.

Some babies also become tired during feeds, come on and off repeatedly or seem frustrated even when they are clearly hungry. Parents are often told everything looks “fine” because weight gain is good but feeding can still feel much harder than expected day to day.

A high palate can sometimes develop alongside tension through the jaw, neck or upper body which may affect how comfortably a baby coordinates sucking, swallowing and breathing. You may also notice more leaking of milk, noisy feeding or difficulty maintaining a dummy.

This does not mean there is anything wrong with your baby but it can help explain why feeding has felt more challenging than anticipated.

Where treatment is appropriate, it is very gentle and aims to support relaxation, comfort and ease of movement through the body.

That feeling where your body never quite switches off

Some people notice they are never fully relaxed, even when they are sitting down in the evening or trying to rest. Their shoulders stay slightly lifted, their jaw feels tight or they catch themselves clenching muscles without meaning to.

Often this has built up gradually over time rather than starting with one obvious problem. The body can become so used to holding tension that it starts to feel normal until symptoms begin to appear.

You might notice it most at the end of the day when everything feels heavier or when you finally stop and realise how much effort your body has been putting in all day.

When I assess this in clinic I am looking at how your body is managing load and tension overall rather than focusing on one isolated sore spot.

Once the body starts to feel safer and more supported it often becomes easier for those areas to properly relax again.

Some babies are much happier once they are moving

You might notice your baby becomes calmer when you are walking carrying them around the house or out in the pram but becomes fussier the moment you stop or sit down. Parents often worry they are “creating a rod for their own back” but many young babies simply find movement comforting and regulating in the early weeks.

The gentle rhythm of walking, swaying and changing position can help babies feel more organised and comfortable in their body. Some babies also become more aware of pressure, wind or tension once everything becomes still which is why they can appear more comfortable once they are moving again.

This is very common in the early months and usually improves gradually over time as babies become more comfortable and adaptable.

Where treatment is appropriate it is very gentle and aims to support comfort relaxation and ease of movement through the body.

That point in the day where everything feels harder

Some people notice it happens at a similar time most days. Things feel manageable through the morning and early afternoon then there is a shift where everything feels like more effort, whether that is your back your shoulders or just moving around.

It can be easy to assume something has gone wrong but in many cases it reflects how your body has been working over the course of the day rather than one specific movement.

Small amounts of effort and tension can build gradually without being obvious. By later in the day your system is simply more fatigued and less tolerant which is why things feel heavier or more noticeable. This does not usually mean anything serious is happening. It is more about how the body is managing what you ask of it over time.

When I assess this in clinic I am looking at how your body is coping across the whole day rather than focusing on one moment.

If you are noticing the same pattern regularly it is often worth addressing it before it starts to limit what you do.

Why does your baby seem more comfortable upright than lying flat?

You might notice your baby is quite content when held upright against your shoulder but becomes more unsettled when you lay them flat - especially after feeds. This can feel confusing when they seem so much more comfortable in one position than another.

Often this is linked to pressure through the tummy and chest. Being upright can help ease that feeling while lying flat can make it more noticeable. This is why some babies wriggle more, draw their legs up or seem harder to get comfortable in that position.

This issue is very common in young babies and usually improves as their system becomes more settled and comfortable over time.

Where treatment is appropriate, it is very gentle and aims to reduce any underlying tension so that different positions feel easier and more manageable.

Why does my knee hurt going downstairs… but not when going upstairs?

This is something people notice quite quickly. Walking upstairs feels fine, but coming down brings on pain at the front of the knee or just under the kneecap.

Going downstairs places a different type of load through the knee. You’re controlling your body weight as you lower yourself, which means the muscles around the knee and hip have to work in a more controlled way. If that control isn’t quite there, more pressure goes through the joint itself.

It’s often not about damage. More commonly, it’s a sign that the knee is being asked to do more than it’s comfortably able to manage at that moment.

This can build up gradually with changes in activity, a bit less strength work or after something like a period of rest or a busy spell where things have been pushed more than usual.

In clinic, I’m usually looking beyond the knee itself at how the hip, thigh and lower leg are sharing the load and helping things move more evenly again.

If stairs are starting to feel like something you have to think about, it’s worth getting it checked rather than working around it.

Why does my neck go when I haven’t done anything?

It can feel like it comes out of nowhere. No clear injury, no heavy lifting, no obvious moment where something went wrong. You just wake up or get up from your desk and your neck feels stiff, sore or restricted and it doesn’t seem to make sense.

In many cases it isn’t about that moment at all – it’s more about what has been building up over time. Long periods in similar positions, low-level tension through the shoulders and upper back, or simply doing the same things day after day all place a steady load through the neck. None of it feels like a problem on its own but it gradually adds up.

The body is very good at adapting and compensating for this and often for quite a while. But there is a limit to how much it can absorb comfortably. Once that buffer is reached, something small or seemingly insignificant can be enough to tip things over and that’s when the pain appears.

In clinic, I’m usually looking at what’s been happening in the background rather than just the moment it “went” and working out what needs to change so things feel more manageable day to day.

If this sounds familiar it’s worth getting it checked rather than waiting for it to settle and then happen again.

Does your baby seem uncomfortable in the car seat… but settles when you take them out?

Some babies are completely content in the car seat, while others seem unsettled quite quickly. They might wriggle, fuss, arch or cry, even on short journeys, then settle not long after being taken out. It can feel confusing, especially when everything else seems fine.

There are lots of possible reasons for this. Sometimes it comes down to fit, positioning or temperature, or simply how confined the seat feels. Some babies don’t like being unable to see you, while others may feel a bit travel sick.

In some cases it can also relate to how they’re moving and feeling in their body. Being held in one position can feel less comfortable for some babies, particularly if they have a preferred side or a bit of underlying tension. You might notice they settle more easily once they’re able to move more freely again.

That doesn’t necessarily mean anything is wrong, but it can be helpful to look at the overall pattern rather than just the car seat itself.

Treatment aims to improve comfort and ease of movement so these everyday situations feel less of a challenge.
