My child talks all day at home.
But at school?

Nothing.

No answering questions.
No saying hello.
No asking for help.
No talking to friends.

And if this sounds familiar, I want you to know something important:

Your child is not choosing silence.

Selective mutism is not about being stubborn, rude, or refusing to speak.

It's what happens when anxiety takes over.

Your child might desperately want to:

• say hello
• answer the teacher
• ask to join a game
• tell someone they need help
• make a friend

But in that moment, their body goes into protection mode.

When anxiety is high, words can disappear.

That is why pressure, rewards, bribing, and constant reminders often don't work.

Because the problem isn't motivation.

The problem is anxiety.

And when we focus only on getting words out, we miss what children need first:
