💜 The story behind my little cabin

Neu You has always been very much me. I’m the one doing the treatments, answering the messages, ordering the products, cleaning, doing the laundry and everything else in between! 😂

But the cabin came later…

Before the cabin, I rented treatment rooms in shared settings. I made them cosy, but there were compromises. Noise, stairs, shared toilets, no reception and very little natural light.

I faced so many challenges just trying to get started, not only finding reliable premises, but navigating my own health at the same time.

It was difficult, but those experiences made me realise how much I wanted somewhere that was truly mine.

So I took a massive risk…

And I built it. 💜

It was a huge project and cost an absolute bomb! 😂 I was involved in everything, from the architecture drawings and planning to deciding where the furniture would go. The garden then had to be completely landscaped around it too.

It was a huge financial commitment for us and a massive leap of faith, but I had a vision and was determined to make it happen.

I wanted somewhere calm, private, welcoming and professional. Somewhere my clients could feel comfortable from the moment they arrived.

I’ve continued to invest in the cabin over the years. My treatment bed was one of those big investments. I saved for a long time for the one I really wanted, and my clients absolutely love it.

And thankfully, I have Mr Hutton by my side when something needs fixing too, from a tiny hinge on a cupboard door to a complete makeover! 😂

He’s always right behind Neu You. We’re a team, working together to provide for our family. 💜

And honestly, it really is my dream come true.

There’s a huge piece of me in this little cabin. Years of hard work, investment, love and believing in what I do.

So when I call it my little therapy cabin, there’s actually an awful lot behind those words.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Neu You along the way. Every booking, recommendation, review and bit of support means more than you know. 💜

🤲 The difference between MLD and lymphatic drainage massage

Following on from yesterday’s post, where I explained why I don’t currently offer MLD at Neu You, I thought I’d explain a little more about what MLD actually is.

With so many treatments now being described as “lymphatic”, the terminology can get confusing.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specific, specialised technique using very gentle, rhythmic movements on the skin to encourage the movement of lymph fluid. The pressure is light and it is very different from traditional massage.

MLD UK also states that MLD “DOES NOT use oils or creams.”

Lymphatic drainage massage is a broader term used for a range of beauty and wellness treatments. These can vary and may include oils, creams or tools.

So if you book something advertised as “lymphatic drainage massage”, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are receiving MLD.

If your consultant has specifically recommended MLD following surgery, make sure you’re booking Manual Lymphatic Drainage rather than assuming every treatment described as “lymphatic” is the same.

And picking up from yesterday’s post about training, MLD UK recognises training through schools including Dr Vodder, Casley-Smith, Földi, Leduc and LTA Fill & Flush, or their accredited teachers.

MLD UK also has different membership levels:

🤲 Member
Trained to work on an intact lymphatic system.

🤲 Member DLT
Trained to work with compromised lymphatic systems, including those affected by surgery, lymphoedema or injury.

So don’t be afraid to ask:

“Where did you train in MLD?”
“What level did you train to?”

That second question can make a real difference when choosing the right therapist for your needs. 💚

I hope this is helpful and makes the terminology a little clearer if you’re considering MLD.

After surgery, always follow your medical team’s advice. 💜

🤲 MLD… the new trend

Manual Lymphatic Drainage seems to be everywhere at the moment, and I’m getting asked about it more and more, especially by new clients looking for post-op support after cosmetic surgery abroad.

So what actually is MLD?

It’s a very gentle, specialised technique using light, rhythmic movements to encourage the movement of lymph fluid. It’s completely different from a traditional massage and isn’t about deep pressure or working into the muscles.

It’s become particularly popular following cosmetic surgery, and I’m regularly getting asked:

“I’ve had surgery in Turkey and my consultant has recommended Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Do you offer it?”

And honestly… I wish I could say yes! 😂

I would love to offer MLD. I’ve looked seriously into the training because I’m asked for it so often, but this is where it gets frustrating.

The training varies hugely. There are shorter courses available, alongside much more in-depth specialist training involving significant theory, practical training and assessment.

I could do a quick course and add MLD to my menu, but that’s just not how I work. If I’m going to offer it, I want to train properly and feel confident that I’m providing the right treatment for the right client.

My experience working in hospice taught me the importance of recognising different types of swelling and knowing when something is outside your scope of practice. That’s something I’ve always taken seriously.

So for now, MLD isn’t something you’ll find at Neu You. 💜

If you’re looking for an MLD therapist, please don’t be afraid to ask about their training and whether their insurance covers the treatment you’re booking. It’s your health, and it’s completely reasonable to want to know that you’re in safe hands.

MLD is a wonderful treatment, and I have huge respect for the therapists who have taken the time to specialise in it.

And who knows… maybe one day I’ll bite the bullet and do it myself, if my brain fog ever improves! 😶‍🌫️😉

💚Sometimes knowing what not to treat is just as important as knowing what you can treat.

A typical day in my little cabin… 🌿🤎

Every client arrives with different needs, so no two treatments are ever quite the same. Today was a mix of remedial work, reflexology and a little bit of glow. 🤍

🤲🏼 Client 1: Remedial Massage

Lower back, glutes, hamstrings and calves, with gentle targeted techniques and hot stones to warm and ease the muscles, supporting her symptoms while she waits for back surgery.

🤲🏼 Client 2: Remedial Massage

Lower legs, calves and feet using targeted Swedish massage, mobilisations and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).

For both I used my go to daytime blend of Rosemary, Marjoram & Lavender. Fresh, herbal and soothing without being too sleepy. I’m yet to meet a client who doesn’t love it! 😂🌿

👣 Client 3: Reflexology

My favourite. 🤍 Peppermint and Lavender blended into Songbird Reflexology Wax, finished with my beautiful foot cream.

She was drifting in and out of sleep by the end. Completely switched off. 😂👣

✨ Client 4: The Glow Escape

Back, neck and shoulder massage with Swedish massage, compression and mobilisation techniques on the thoracic spine. Perfect for those desk bound shoulders that have had enough of sitting all day! 💻

Then came the oils…

Client: “Something fruity and woody. Do you know what I mean?”

Me “Absolutely!”

Client: “Only you would!” 😂

Made up on the spot…

🌿 Cypress 3 drops
🍋 May Chang 4 drops
🪵 Frankincense 2 drops

Fresh, fruity, woody and luckily, a winner!

Then a Hydro Facial for that lovely hydrated glow, followed by a little homework on the way out… a good old quad stretch after sitting all day. 😂

Four treatments. Four completely different needs.

A typical day in my little cabin… and a lovely day doing what I love. 💜
