Hopefully this gives some insight into a technique you may experience during treatment and why it’s used!

Stretching applies a sustained pull to a muscle. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) works differently. A gentle isometric contraction activates receptors within the muscle-tendon unit, triggering a reflex that temporarily reduces muscle tension. During this brief period, the muscle can often lengthen more comfortably than with stretching alone.

Rather than forcing a muscle to relax, MET works with the nervous system to encourage it.

“You’re out of alignment.”

It’s a phrase that’s used all the time but rarely explained.

What looks like “misalignment” is often the result of:
- Muscle imbalances or compensation patterns
- Restricted joint mobility
- Long-term postural habits
- Individual biomechanics
- Protective responses after injury or pain

These aren’t usually structural flaws. They’re adaptations.

The goal isn’t to force your body into an “ideal” position. It’s to understand why it’s moving or holding itself that way, then address the cause instead of just chasing symptoms.

Rest calms a tendon down. It doesn’t build it back up.

Tendons are mechanosensitive, which means they respond and remodel based on the demands placed on them rather than the absence of demands. When load is removed for too long, the tissue has no reason to reorganise or reinforce itself. Capacity keeps declining even as symptoms settle, and a gap starts to form between what the tendon can handle and what daily life actually asks of it. That gap is often what brings the pain back once movement resumes.

Feeling better isn’t the same as being ready. A tendon can feel fine and still be underprepared for the load it’s about to face.

Recovery isn’t really about rest versus activity. It’s about whether load gets reintroduced in a way the tissue can actually adapt to.

Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis, it’s a symptom with many possible causes.

That shooting pain down your leg could come from a disc issue, tight muscles, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis… the list goes on.

Two people can have the exact same symptoms and need completely different treatment.

That’s why it’s important to discover the root cause by seeing a professional. Guessing at exercises or stretches online can bring short-term relief, but without knowing what’s actually driving the pain, it tends to come back.

A proper assessment looks at your whole body and your history, not just where it hurts. That’s how you get a plan built for you, not a generic one.

If you’re dealing with sciatica, don’t wait it out, get it looked at properly.

Simple sleep hygiene tips during recovery:
* Keep a consistent sleep and wake time, even on weekends
* Limit screens 30-60 mins before bed
* Keep your room cool and dark
* Avoid caffeine in the afternoon/evening
* If pain is disrupting sleep, tell your clinician!

If you’re recovering from an injury and struggling to sleep because of pain or discomfort, that’s worth mentioning at your next appointment, it’s part of the bigger picture, not a separate issue!

A quick but important reminder for anyone healing from a recent scar!

The skin barrier isn’t fully rebuilt during the early stages of scar formation, this is precisely what leaves the area so vulnerable to UV damage. This isn’t a short window either, full scar maturation can take up to 2 years, so sun protection needs to be a consistent part of your routine, not a one-off precaution.

Simple steps make a real difference:
✅ SPF 50, applied directly to the scar
✅ Scar treatments layered on top
✅ Look out for silicone sheeting with built-in SPF for added convenience
