Is your pasture growing rapidly?

All this sunshine, rain and warmer weather is increasing grass growth across the UK. This young, less fibrous grass is sweet, high in sugar and can be irresistible to your horses, so they can consume a lot! This can lead to obesity, digestive issues, metabolic problems & laminitis.

Use management strategies such as strip grazing & grazing muzzles to reduce grass intake & calories.

If your horse is sensitive to sugars in the grass, watch out for more weight gain, changes in body composition, fat pads and signs of laminitis which can include:

🐎Bounding digital pulses
🐎Heat around the coronet band or any where in the foot
🐎Sensitive to walking on hard/stony ground
🐎Stiffness walking / difficulty in turning
🐎Puffiness around eyes /sheath / teats
🐎Neck crest goes hard
🐎Shifting weight from hooves
🐎Lethargy
🐎Weight gain / fatty deposits
🐎Loose droppings/diarrhoea

Use grass free areas/ tracks and soaked hay, correct nutrients, monitor weight & condition weekly and always call your vet if you suspect your horse has laminitis.

As well as using management strategies, exercise (only if your horse is comfortable) and correct nutrition, we have a range of supplements that can also be used to support and maintain:

🌱Normal hormone balance
🌱Health & vitality
🌱Normal liver function
🌱Good hoof health
🌱Normal digestion & gut function

Grass is set to have a surge in growth with the forecast rain this week and warmer weather next week, meaning an increase in sugars/calories.

If you have a horse or pony that is prone colic, to putting weight on quickly, is insulin resistant/metabolic and prone to laminitis please be vigilant.

Subtle signs that grass may be affecting your horse include:

🌱 Digestive disturbances - bloating, gas, soft or loose droppings, droppings smell acrid etc.
🌱Sensitive to walking on hard ground - footiness
🌱 Difficulty turning in a circle
🌱 Stiffness
🌱 Bounding digital pulse
🌱Heat around the coronet band
🌱Hard crest
🌱Increased anxiety

If you notice any of these signs then make sure you reduce calorie intake, grass intake/grazing time, increase low sugar/carbohydrate fibre and exercise providing your horse is sound & comfortable.

Always call your vet if you are worried about your horse's health.

At Ron Fields Nutrition Ltd we have a range of Ayurvedic supplements that can be used to support and maintain normal digestion, gut health, hormone balance and hoof health in your horses.
