Dieticians are an integral part of our team in providing support and education on nutrition to both staff and service users.

Their work goes beyond food and nutrition, helping individuals rebuild their relationship with eating, address physical health needs, and support recovery goals that are unique to each person. By working closely with the wider multidisciplinary team, dietitians ensure care is tailored, compassionate, and focused on the individual and their needs.🌿

Supporting Recovery in the Perinatal Period 🌿

Navigating the perinatal period with a history of disordered eating, exercise, or body image concerns can feel overwhelming.

For some, pregnancy can bring motivation for recovery — offering a chance to nourish and care for themselves in new ways. With the right support, this can be a meaningful opportunity for lasting change✨

Early recognition and intervention are vital. By supporting professionals to identify signs, have sensitive conversations, and signpost to appropriate services, we can improve the outcome.

Recovery during pregnancy or early parenthood can feel challenging, but support is available.

Helpful steps may include:
• Working with healthcare professionals to create a supportive care plan
• Accessing specialist eating disorder services
• Maintaining regular, balanced nutrition where possible
• Seeking emotional support from trusted individuals

Here at Evolve, we have a pathway with the Perinatal Mental Health team to provide support to women who experience eating difficulties in the pre and post-natal period🤝

Our Perinatal link worker, Katharine takes the lead on perinatal cases. This includes offering joint assessments and regular reviews alongside the Perinatal team, as required in line with their appropriate eating disorder treatment. 💜

Recognising the Signs 🔍

Becoming a parent can bring joy—but it can also feel overwhelming, or not at all what you expected. It’s important to recognise the signs that you or someone you love might be struggling. Here are just some of the signs to look out for:

Maternal mental health difficulties can present in different ways. Here are some common signs:
• Persistent low mood
• Increased anxiety or worry
• Thoughts or images about harming yourself or harm coming to your baby (intrusive thoughts)
• Difficulty sleeping (beyond usual infant care)
• Struggling to bond with your baby or feeling detached from them
• Finding it impossible to sleep or relax, even when your baby is sleeping
• Thinking that you’re not a good parent or your baby is better off without you
• Seeing, hearing, or believing things that others don’t
• Changes in appetite or energy

Maternal Mental Health and Eating Disorder signs:
Eating disorders during pregnancy and after birth may not always be visible. Some signs to be aware of include:
• Preoccupation with weight, food, or body image
• Restricting food intake or skipping meals
• Binge eating or purging behaviours
• Anxiety around eating in front of others
• Feelings of guilt or shame related to food

If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the above signs, then please speak to your GP, midwife or anyone involved in your care.

This week, we are raising awareness and encouraging open, stigma-free conversations around maternal mental health.💜

Maternal mental health conditions can include eating disorders. Pregnancy and the postnatal period can be a particularly vulnerable time, with changes in body image, identity, and routine.

What is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week?

Maternal Mental Health Awareness Week is a week-long campaign dedicated to talking about mental health conditions before, during and after pregnancy.
The week is all about:
• raising public and professional awareness of
• advocating for women and families impacted
• changing attitudes
• helping people access the information, care and support they need to recover.

The week is organised and led by MMHA member Perinatal Mental Health Partnership UK (PMHP UK).
PMHP UK is a small group of individuals, including parents with lived experience and clinicians, who came together to raise awareness of maternal mental health.
