Meet George, one of our Community Navigators supporting people across East & Midlothian.

George knows that taking the first steps can feel overwhelming. Sometimes what makes the difference is simply having someone there with you. At an appointment, in a café, or just on the end of the phone.

You don't need to have everything figured out before getting in touch.💙

This August, Thomas Hastie will cycle more than 2,300km from Musselburgh to Benidorm as part of his challenge, Miles That Matter.

He's taking on this incredible journey in memory of his sister, who he sadly lost to su***de, and after losing both his mum and dad at a young age.

Tommy speaks openly about the impact these losses had on his own mental health and why he believes having someone to talk to can make all the difference.

He's raising money for Andy's Man Club, helping ensure men have a safe place to talk, support one another and know they're not alone.

At Substances Support Scotland, we believe in the power of conversation, connection and community, which is why Tommy's story resonates so strongly with us.

If you'd like to support Tommy's challenge, donate or simply read more about his story, you can do so here:

Good luck Tommy, from everyone at Substances Support Scotland.
Every mile matters. 💙🚲

We are delighted to announce that Substances Support Scotland has been awarded £150,000 through the ALLIANCE’s Self Management Fund.

Over the next two years, this funding will support Side by Side, a new project designed to strengthen early self-management capacity for people affected by alcohol and drug use. The project will work alongside people to build confidence, wellbeing and practical self-management skills, helping them navigate challenges and make positive changes that matter to them.

Shaped by lived and living experience, it will ensure that the voices of the people we support remain at the heart of its development.

We are excited to begin this work and to contribute to learning about how self-management approaches can improve wellbeing and support recovery.

We would like to thank the Health and Social Care Alliance Scotland (the ALLIANCE) and the Scottish Government for supporting this work.

As part of , we’d like you to meet Steven 👇

“What I get out of volunteering is a massive sense of purpose and personal growth. It’s pushed me out my comfort zone and improved my communication and listening skills.

Every shift reminds me of the importance of community support.”

Steven now supports outreach in the community, often starting conversations with something as simple as:
“Are you alright?” 💙

Kicking off

We’re delighted to introduce and welcome Hannah, our new Volunteer Coordinator at Substances Support Scotland 💙

In our latest blog, Hannah shares her passion for the power of volunteering:
“Volunteering… can offer individuals a space to grow in confidence, develop skills, and feel a sense of purpose and belonging.”

This is exactly what we’re striving to create through our Positive Pathways – safe, supportive spaces where people can connect, grow, and move forward in their own way.

✨ Find out more about Hannah and her role by reading the full blog below 👇
