Do you feel like you’re constantly bracing for the next outburst?
Like even when things are calm, you can’t actually relax. Because you know it could flip at any second.
You’re monitoring their mood the moment they walk through the door. You’re adjusting your tone, your timing, your words. You’re reading every signal. And even when nothing happens, you’re still tense. Because the waiting has its own weight.
I work with parents who describe this as living on high alert. And what I want you to hear is that this isn’t an overreaction. That’s your own nervous system responding to chronic unpredictability.
When a teenager is dysregulated regularly, the whole household starts to mirror it. Everyone is bracing. Everyone is in a version of survival mode. And the hardest part is this: when you’re bracing, you can’t be the regulated anchor your teenager needs. Not because you’re failing. But because your own system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do under pressure.
This is why the work I do starts with the parent. Not because it’s your fault. But because you’re the one who can change the temperature of the whole room.
You deserve to stop bracing. So does your family.
If this sounds like your home right now, drop a comment. Tell me what it’s been like.
