This week, we’re supporting the Child Accident Prevention Trust campaign to help children lead active, healthy lives, safe from serious injury.

Child Safety Week is all about promoting accident prevention. Empowering families to make simple changes without feeling overwhelmed. We do this by sharing the really practical, simple things we can all do to keep children safe, and we'll be sharing information and tips this week across our socials.

You can download Child Accident Prevention Trust Parent’s Pack for bite-sized facts and safety tips on the main accident risks to children, you can find the link to this in the comments or head to their website or social media for all the details 💚

Imelda, one of our franchisees in Northern Ireland, was at the National Allergy Strategy Launch at Stormont last night. The strategy sets out a four-nation blueprint to address systemic failures in allergy care, reduce preventable harm, tackle health inequalities and embed allergy within national policy frameworks.

Really proud that allergy awareness is becoming a standard part of our two-hour baby & child first aid classes 💚

In what proved to be a record-breaking month for hot weather in the UK, our franchisee team were still busy out and about delivering first aid classes and attending events in May. Here’s a little of what we got up to!

- Fran Mini First Aid Watford & Hemel Hempstead, met one of her celebrity favourites, Will Mellor - well done to Fran for being ‘on-brand’ at the show and sharing Mini First Aid with Will!

- Richard from Mini First Aid Milton Keynes & Northampton was back at Holne Chase Primary School teaching the amazing kids how to deal with an emergency and some basic first aid skills. Well done to all the new first aid superstars! 🌟

- Allison Mini First Aid North Staffordshire was also training some new first aid superstars at St Filumena’s Catholic Primary School. Fantastic learning 👏 ⭐️

- Natalie in Mini First Aid Warrington had a stand at The Baby Fayre Cheshire, sharing first aid tips and selling Mini First Aid kits and products.

- We welcome Morgan who has taken over Mini First Aid Plymouth & West Devon franchise - this image tells you a bit more about Morgan. We’ll share more once classes in that area have officially launched!

- Thanks to a lovely parent at a baby & child class in Mini First Aid Bournemouth, Lhamo managed to give some first aid demos with an actual baby!

- 👀 The more observant of you may notice that this image is not in fact Glasgow 😉 , but Vicky from our Mini First Aid Glasgow franchise was in beautiful Ibiza this month and sent this reminder of the European emergency number - super important if you are travelling in Europe this summer.

- Several of our franchisee teams attended the The Baby Show at the NEC in Birmingham, giving talks, demonstrations and meeting lots of wonderful new and expectant parents. Thank you to everyone who came and chatted with us.

- And finally, our Kate was a special guest speaker at the recent EWiF (Encouraging Women Into Franchising) event, speaking about losing her brother Matt and the beginnings of Mini First Aid.

We hope you all had a super, sunny May, whatever you got up to 💚

Hot drinks are the leading cause of burns to children in the UK*

We are so grateful to Laura and Gracie and family for sharing their story to show just how easily and quickly a hot drink accident can happen. A child can grab or knock over a drink in seconds and how you react and deal with the incident can have a lasting impact.

Gracie's family had taken a Mini First Aid class with Emily Mini First Aid Warwickshire, Coventry, Tamworth & Lutterworth - their learning had stuck and they did all the right things, and now Gracie is a thriving toddler with no visible burn scars.

You can read Gracie's story in full on our blog this week 💚

If your child has any of the signs or symptoms of diabetes, you should take them straight to the doctor and ask for a blood glucose test.

The most common symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children are:

🚽 Toilet: Going to the toilet a lot to pass urine, bed wetting by a previously dry child or heavier nappies in babies. Getting up in the night to go to the toilet.
💦 Thirsty: Being really thirsty and not being able to quench the thirst. Your child may ask for a drink more often, finish drinks very quickly or you may notice they generally drink more.
💤 Tired: Feeling more tired than usual. Having less energy than normal, not playing as often, less energy for sports
🪞 Thinner: Losing weight or looking thinner than usual.

You may also notice your child getting more infections than usual.

Type 1 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes in children. Symptoms tend to come on within a matter of days or weeks and you should get urgent medical help if you notice any of these symptoms.

The symptoms of type 2 diabetes in children are the same as they are for type 1 diabetes, but they may be less obvious and develop more slowly, for example over weeks or months but you may still notice them.

Please see your GP as quickly as possible if you suspect your child may be struggling with this condition. A quick and simple finger-prick test can help identify high blood sugar levels. If diabetes is suspected, your GP will refer your child to a specialist diabetes team or hospital for further assessment, and further tests will be carried out to help confirm the diagnosis.

For lots more information directly from Diabetes UK check out Episode 12 of the Family Health Podcast where we do a deep dive into this condition, including what to look out for, what to do and what you can expect if your child gets a diabetes diagnosis. Link in comments 💚

Can you bring your baby to our Baby & Child First Aid classes?

Yes, absolutely!

Pre-crawling babies are very welcome to come along. If you need to feed, change or comfort your baby during the session, that is completely fine.

Once little ones are crawling or on the move, classes can become less suitable. We want you to feel relaxed, able to take in the information and join in with the practical activities without worrying about where your baby has wandered.

If you are unsure about the venue and whether it will work for your pram or pushchair, simply contact your local instructor. You will find their details at the bottom of the location webpage when you search using your postcode on the classes page of our website.

Our two-hour baby & child classes run all across the UK and cost from just £30/pp - see what's available in your area on our website.
