Feeling extremely grateful to have so much beauty right on my doorstep. Taking a moment to slow down, breathe it all in and truly appreciate the little things. Living in the moment and enjoying some well earned self-care 🦋

“You are the mountain and everything you need to climb it is within you.”

Last year I wrote a little mountain analogy for my counselling students and I thought I would adapt it for my clients because I love using analogy to explain the counselling journey.

When we think about climbing a mountain, we don’t expect the journey to be easy all the way to the top. Climbers stop to rest, take in the view, regain their strength and find their footing before continuing.

The counselling journey can be much the same.

In counselling, many people arrive feeling frustrated with themselves for not moving faster, not “getting over it” quickly enough, or for needing to pause because of everything they are carrying. Stopping to rest on the mountain does not mean you have failed the climb.

Sometimes the pause is part of the journey.

Sometimes looking back helps you see how far you have already come.

Sometimes the view reminds you why you started climbing in the first place.

Counselling can provide a space to pause, reflect and gather the strength to keep moving forward at your own pace, in your own way.

Be gentle with yourself as you climb.

What would I tell my younger counsellor self ?

You don’t need to have all the right answers.
You don’t need to fix people.
Your nervous system matters too.

What matters most is the relationship.
Because long before techniques or interventions make a difference, people need to feel safe, seen, heard and understood.

The therapeutic relationship isn’t just part of counselling it’s the foundation of healing.

I was out walking this morning in the country park and spotted this empty chair and it got me thinking as I often do when out walking. I sat on a bench looking at the chair and started writing about how Mental health does not discriminate but yet we often do.

We are quick to judge what we physically see such as a person’s behaviour, their reactions, their appearance, their role in society, or the way they cope without taking the time to understand the battles they may be facing internally.

Too often, people are overlooked because of the role they hold. We assume that because someone is a parent, a professional, a carer, a leader, or the person everyone relies on, they must be coping. Mental health does not care about status, responsibility, strength, or expectation.

Behind every struggle is a human being trying to survive often alone experiences we may never fully see or understand. Pain is not always visible and neither is strength.

Too often, people living with mental health challenges are reduced to labels, assumptions, or stereotypes, instead of being met with compassion, patience and humanity. Too many people continue to suffer in silence because they feel alone often due to not feeling understood.

No one should feel they have to hide their struggles or carry them alone.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week and this should not only remind us to talk about mental health, but to truly see people beyond what is visible on the surface and to remind those struggling that they are not alone.

My hope in my life is that I will always pull up a chair next to someone if they need it. Kindness is the biggest impact we can leave on the world. I am not saying I am always 100% at this but I definitely strive to my best.

As we approach the final days of Mental Health Awareness Week, I’ve been reflecting on both my personal and professional journey.

As someone who spent many years struggling with anxiety, I know how overwhelming it can feel. I also know that healing, growth, and change are possible. Learning to change my relationship with anxiety has been one of the most important journeys of my life, and it’s a privilege to now support others in theirs too.

Here are a few things I’ve learnt along the way:

🦋 Be compassionate with yourself. You are doing the best you can, and that deserves kindness, not criticism.

🦋 Check in with yourself regularly, mentally, emotionally, and physically. Sometimes our mind and body are simply asking us to slow down and listen. Ask yourself “What do I need right now ?”

🦋 It’s okay to have difficult days. A bad day does not mean a bad life. Rest when you need to, then begin again tomorrow.

🦋 Anxiety doesn’t always have to be the enemy. Sometimes it’s a signal, a protector, or an invitation to better understand ourselves.

🦋 Find your own toolbox for regulating your nervous system. What helps one person may look completely different for another. Movement, rest, music, nature, connection, creativity, breath-work, find what brings you peace and joy.

And most importantly, please remember. You do not have to navigate things alone. Asking for help is not weakness it is strength, courage, and self-awareness.

Healing is not linear, but every small step forward matters.

🦋 A new look for The Holistic Butterfly 🦋

Over the years, both I and my business have grown, evolved and changed in so many ways. As the journey has continued, it felt like the right time for my logo and branding to reflect that growth too. I have had to sadly say goodbye to aspects of the business that I have loved and welcomed some new opportunities that have allowed me to use the experience gained in different ways.

The butterfly has always held a special meaning for me representing transformation, healing, strength, resilience and the joy of life. That meaning will always remain at the heart of what I do and the reason for the name and starting all this in the first place.

I wanted the new design to feel brighter, calmer, more vibrant and more aligned with the work I now do through counselling and promoting positive wellbeing and mental health.

Change can feel uncomfortable at times, but it can also be beautiful. I am nervous about changing what has felt comfortable for so long. I have gone back and forth on this for over a month now and changed it so many times but this one just feels right.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support The Holistic Butterfly on this amazing, life changing journey and I can’t wait for what comes next.

Watch this space as I am not done yet 🦋
