I'm a big believer that if a product changes, our opinion of it should change too.

A few years ago, I'd have described Iso XP as a fantastic protein powder nutritionally, but flavour wise it fell a little short of the mark.

Fast forward to today, and it's a completely different story. The quality has always been there, but now the flavour and texture have caught up.

In fact, I genuinely had to double check the tub because I thought I was drinking Ghost Whey.

Credit where it's due 👏

Whatever Applied Nutrition have changed, don't change it back.

🧪 Ingredient Spotlight: Carnosine

Source: A naturally occurring dipeptide formed from the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine, found primarily in skeletal muscle and the brain.

🔑 Key Benefits

• Buffers acid build up during intense exercise

• Improves muscular endurance and repeated sprint performance

• Helps reduce glycation (AGE formation)

• Supports healthy aging and cellular function

• Acts as a powerful intracellular antioxidant

🧬 What Is Carnosine?

Carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide concentrated in fast twitch muscle fibres. It plays a vital role in exercise performance by helping maintain normal muscle pH during high intensity efforts.

Although it can be taken directly, supplementing with beta-alanine is generally the most effective way to raise muscle carnosine levels, as beta-alanine is the rate limiting precursor.

⚙️ How It Works

During intense exercise, hydrogen ions accumulate, lowering muscle pH and contributing to fatigue. Carnosine acts as an intracellular pH buffer, helping delay this process and allowing muscles to perform for longer.

Beyond exercise, research suggests carnosine may also:

• Help inhibit formation of Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) associated with aging

• Reduce oxidative stress

• Support healthy inflammatory balance

• Protect proteins and cell membranes from damage

These additional actions have made carnosine an ingredient of growing interest in healthy aging research.

📏 Optimal Dosage

Direct carnosine:

• 500-2,000mg daily

To increase muscle carnosine stores:

• Beta-alanine: 3.2-6.4g daily for several weeks remains the gold standard.

🧠 Practical Takeaway

Most people know beta-alanine for the paresthesia (tingling sensation), but its real purpose is much deeper, it increases muscle carnosine, one of the body's most important buffering molecules.

One of the most common things you'll hear is:

"You need to drink loads more water when you're taking creatine."

It's not completely wrong, but in my opinion, it's just not the best way of looking at it.

Creatine doesn't suddenly mean you need to force down gallons of extra water, it simply makes good hydration even more important.

If you're already drinking enough water, you're doing exactly what you should be, especially if you're training regularly or spending time in the current hot weather.

🧪 Ingredient Spotlight: Enfinity®

Source: A patented form of paraxanthine, the primary metabolite produced when your body breaks down caffeine.

🔑 Key Benefits

Supports energy, focus, and alertness

May provide a smoother stimulant experience

Less dependent on CYP1A2 caffeine metabolism

Supports reaction time and cognitive performance

May reduce some unwanted caffeine side effects

🧬 What Is Enfinity®?

Enfinity® is a patented form of paraxanthine, the main active metabolite generated after caffeine consumption.

When caffeine is metabolised, it is converted approximately into:

80-84% Paraxanthine

10-12% Theobromine

4% Theophylline

Paraxanthine is responsible for many of caffeine's desirable effects, including alertness, focus, and mental performance.

⚙️ How It Works

Like caffeine, paraxanthine acts primarily through adenosine receptor antagonism, helping reduce feelings of fatigue and increase alertness.

It may also:

Support dopamine signalling

Increase mental energy and concentration

Enhance reaction time and cognitive performance

Promote fat mobilisation during exercise

Unlike caffeine, paraxanthine bypasses the need for significant CYP1A2 conversion, meaning its effects may be more consistent between individuals.

☕ Is It Actually Better Than Caffeine?

Theobromine and theophylline contribute to some of caffeine's secondary physiological effects, including cardiovascular and smooth muscle actions. However, it would be an oversimplification to say they are solely responsible for all of caffeine's negatives.

The current theory behind paraxanthine supplementation is that by delivering caffeine's primary active metabolite directly, you may retain much of the focus and energy while potentially reducing jitters, crashes, and variability in response.

📏 Optimal Dosage

Typical doses range from: 100-300mg daily

Most pre-workout products currently use 150-300mg.

One of the most underrated skills in any industry is being comfortable saying:

"I don't know."

The moment we think we know everything is usually the moment we stop learning.

Some of the best things I've learned in nutrition started with a question I couldn't answer immediately.

Curiosity will always take you further than ego.

🧪 Ingredient Spotlight: Tribulus Terrestris

Source: A traditional botanical extract rich in steroidal saponins, particularly protodioscin, which is believed to be the most important active constituent.

🔑 Key Benefits

Supports libido and sexual wellbeing

May support healthy DHT activity

Supports motivation and drive

Traditionally used for vitality and performance

Often stacked in male health formulas

🧬 What Is Tribulus Terrestris?

Tribulus terrestris is one of the most well-known ingredients in the testosterone-support category. However, modern research has largely challenged the original bodybuilding claim that it significantly increases testosterone in healthy men.

What matters most is not simply the total saponin percentage on the label, but the amount of protodioscin, the specific steroidal saponin thought to drive many of Tribulus' benefits.

Two products may both claim "90% saponins" while containing very different levels of protodioscin.

⚙️ How It Works

Tribulus appears to work primarily through mechanisms other than direct testosterone elevation.

Research suggests it may:

Support dopamine signalling involved in motivation and libido

Influence nitric oxide pathways involved in blood flow

Support healthy DHT activity in certain individuals

Enhance sexual desire and performance

This helps explain why many users report improvements in libido, confidence, and wellbeing despite little or no measurable increase in testosterone levels.

📏 Optimal Dosage

Typical daily doses range from:

500-1500mg daily

When possible, look for extracts standardised for protodioscin content, rather than focusing exclusively on total saponins.

🔥 Recommended Stack

One of the most popular pairings is:

Tribulus Terrestris + Anacyclus pyrethrum

This combination is commonly used in advanced male vitality formulas due to their complementary effects on libido, drive, and reproductive health.

🧠 Practical Takeaway

Tribulus is best viewed as a libido, vitality, and motivation ingredient, rather than a true testosterone booster. The most effective products are often those standardised for meaningful levels of protodioscin, not simply the highest sapo

People often mistake optimisation for maximisation.

It could be more caffeine, more testosterone, more supplements or more training.

But optimisation isn't about seeing how much you can cram into the system.

It's about finding the amount that produces the best outcome with the fewest downsides.

🧪 Ingredient Spotlight: Citicoline (CDP-Choline)

Source: A highly bioavailable choline donor used to support cognitive performance, focus, and long term brain health.

🔑 Key Benefits

• Supports focus, memory, and cognition
• Increases acetylcholine production
• Supports brain cell membrane integrity
• May support dopamine signalling
• Commonly used in nootropic and focus formulas

🧬 What Is Citicoline?

Citicoline (CDP-Choline) is a compound made from choline + cytidine. Once absorbed, cytidine converts into uridine, which plays a major role in brain cell repair, phospholipid synthesis, and neuronal health.

Unlike fast acting stimulants, Citicoline is often viewed as more of a foundational cognitive support ingredient.

⚙️ How It Works

Citicoline primarily works by increasing acetylcholine, one of the brain’s most important neurotransmitters for:

• Focus
• Learning
• Memory
• Cognitive processing

It also supports production of phosphatidylcholine, a key structural component of brain cell membranes.

Research suggests Citicoline may additionally support:

• Dopamine receptor density
• Brain energy metabolism
• Long term cognitive resilience

📏 Optimal Dosage

Typical doses range from:
250-500mg daily for cognitive support
500-1000mg+ in advanced nootropic formulas

Just a quick review of the new Focusmax RTD cans by Strom, and I actually really like the approach with this one.

No fillers, just 5 ingredients that each have a clear purpose:

120mg Natural Caffeine for smooth energy.

250mg Citicoline for focus and mental clarity.

200mg Uridine Monophosphate for cognitive support and mood

1g L-Tyrosine for dopamine/adrenaline support under stress.

25mg Senactiv® for recovery.

Lightly carbonated too, so you don't get that bloated feeling that some drinks give you.

Personally, I think this hits a really nice balance between energy, mood elevation, focus and mental resilience.

And with the weather we're having at the moment, I can actually see this replacing coffee for a lot of people.

For now, I have the Pineapple Coconut 🍍🥥

For later... I'm going to take the p**s 🌈😂
