It looks like play, but it’s doing a lot more than that.

Parachute play is a highly effective way to support children’s development in a fun, collaborative, and structured way 🎈

As the parachute rises and falls, children are building gross motor skills, learning to work as a team, and developing problem-solving abilities.

It also supports communication and helps with sensory regulation, particularly modulation of force, or understanding how much effort is needed in different movements 💬

One simple way to build this skill is by using different weighted balls on the parachute ⚽🏐

Children have to adjust their movements depending on whether the ball is light or heavy, helping them practise grading their force while keeping the game going.

These kinds of activities can be adapted to meet individual needs, while keeping engagement high and therapeutic goals embedded within play.

The end of the school year is an exciting time, but for many children, it also brings a lot of uncertainty 🏫

Moving from primary to secondary school, transitioning from nursery to Reception, or even changing classes can feel like a very big deal. For some children, especially those who find change difficult, this period can bring anxiety, sleep disruption, and changes in behaviour.

At Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services, we want to help families feel prepared and supported as they navigate these transitions together 💚

💚 Supporting families through transitions 💚

A few photos from this morning's transitions session.

It was wonderful to spend time with parents discussing practical strategies to support children through periods of change and transition. These sessions provide an opportunity to explore ideas, share experiences and build confidence in supporting children as they navigate new environments, routines and expectations.

One of the most valuable aspects of these sessions is the chance for parents to connect with others who may be facing similar experiences, creating a supportive space for discussion and shared learning.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such a positive session 🩵

Sarah recently completed a 6-week intervention block with a child whose goals focused on developing gross motor skills 🎊

At the start of intervention, the child found it difficult to use steps and stairs safely and struggled to sit in a cross-legged position during carpet time activities.

Over the course of the sessions, it was fantastic to see such meaningful progress. By the end of the block, the child was able to climb stairs with no or minimal hand support and sit comfortably on the carpet in a cross-legged position during adult-led learning.

They also showed so much more confidence when using balance beams, which was wonderful to see.

It was a real pleasure for Sarah to support this child and incredibly rewarding to see the difference that targeted occupational therapy intervention made over a relatively short period of time 💚

Today is Global Parents Day 💚

This year’s theme, Together for Parents, is a reminder that no parent should ever feel they have to navigate challenges alone.

At Liverpool Occupational Therapy Services, every day we see the love, patience, resilience, and advocacy that parents and carers give to their children…often while juggling worries, appointments, school meetings, and everyday life behind the scenes.

Whether your child is thriving, struggling, growing, regulating, learning, or simply taking things one step at a time…you are doing better than you think 💙

Today, we celebrate parents, carers, guardians, and support networks everywhere 👏

Huff, puff… GO 💨💚

These fun oral motor activities help children develop the strength, coordination and control needed for everyday skills such as eating, drinking and speech development — all through play-based intervention.

Not only are these activoties brilliant for developing breath control and oral motor coordination, but activities like bubbles and blowing games can also be calming and regulating for children with sensory needs.

The best part? The children are having so much fun they don’t even realise how hard they’re working 💚

Which activity would your child enjoy most? 👀

Many parents and carers sit in a difficult in-between space.

Not quite sure if something is a concern.
Not sure if they should wait and see.
Not sure what support would even look like.

That uncertainty can feel overwhelming.

Our Ask the OT sessions are designed to give clarity.

Here’s what it is:
🧠 A full 60-minute session with a qualified Occupational Therapist
📍 Available in person (Liverpool clinic) or online via Microsoft Teams
👶 You can bring your child if helpful

We can talk through:
– sensory needs and behaviours you’re noticing
– school concerns or feedback you’ve received
– motor skills (writing, coordination, daily tasks)
– routines that feel difficult at home
– emotional regulation and overwhelm

You’ll leave with:
✔ Clear understanding of what might be going on
✔ Practical strategies you can use immediately
✔ Advice tailored to your child (not generic information)
✔ Next steps if further support is needed

This is not a long waiting list service or a formal assessment pathway.
It is direct, practical support from an Occupational Therapist who listens and helps you make sense of things.

💷 £75 per session
📍 Liverpool clinic or online

If you’re unsure whether this is right for you, message us, and we can talk it through. If you’d like to book your session, contact us here - https://liverpool-occupational-therapy-services.co.uk/contact-us/
