Summer in Liverpool with a sensory-sensitive child doesn't have to feel stressful 🌞

Here are a few ideas that tend to work well:

🌿 Sefton Park - wide open spaces, fresh air, and room to move. Great for children who need to regulate through movement.

🐠 Blue Planet Aquarium - calm, dimly lit, and mesmerising. Often a hit with children who prefer quieter sensory input.

🚂 Merseyrail train trips - some children love the rhythm and routine of trains. A short trip somewhere new can feel like a big adventure.

🏖️ Crosby Beach - open, natural, and far less crowded than typical tourist spots.

Every child is different, so go with what you know and don't be afraid to have a quiet day at home when that's what's needed 💙

What a way to end the academic year 💚

This week our team completed an Emergency First Aid session facilitated by the incredible Millie's Trust - making sure that every single one of us is fully prepared and equipped to keep the children in our care safe.

First aid training is something we take really seriously at LOTS. The children and families who come through our doors deserve a team that is not only clinically excellent but ready for every eventuality.

Can you believe we're nearly at the end of another school year? 🏫

What a year it's been. New schools, new teachers, new friendships, new challenges, new milestones.

We work term time, so our clinics will be pausing for summer. But we cannot wait to be back to work in September.

We are so excited to be sharing this one because it is exactly the kind of event we love to see happening in our community.

The Accessible Festival is the UK's first fully accessible family festival - a celebration where fun, music, and inclusion go hand in hand. Ten years on, it has become a much-loved annual highlight for families and individuals living with disabilities, and this year looks set to be the best one yet.

From accessible climbing walls to music, entertainment, and so much more - it is a powerful reminder of what true accessibility looks like in action. A day where nobody has to miss out and no compromise is made on joy.

For the families we work with, events like this are so important. Every child deserves to dance, laugh, and connect without barriers 💙

Celebrating 10 years of Accessible Festival in Bury – inclusive music, arts, community, creativity and fun for everyone

Scissors might seem simple but cutting is actually a really complex skill ✂️

To cut effectively, a child needs to use both hands working together in a coordinated way, one to hold and guide the paper, one to cut. This is called bilateral coordination, and it's something our Occupational Therapists work on regularly with the children we support.

Some children find this straightforward. Others need a bit more time, practice, and the right support to get there and that's completely okay.

There are also some brilliant adapted scissors available that can make a real difference for children who need them, making cutting accessible and achievable for a much wider range of children 💚

One programme our team has used with great results is the Peta Scissor Skills Programme - a structured approach that builds cutting skills step by step in a way that's manageable and confidence-building for children.

It's a great reminder that in Occupational Therapy, there's rarely a one-size-fits-all answer. We look at what each child needs and find the right tools and approach for them.
