A Wonderful Few Weeks at the Home 🌸

It has been another very busy, positive and meaningful few weeks for our residents, with lots of opportunities to enjoy the community, celebrate different cultures, welcome visitors and simply spend time doing the things that bring joy and connection. ❤️

☕ Out and About in the Community

Our residents have enjoyed some lovely outings recently, including trips to the charity shops followed by a well-deserved coffee with cappuccinos and lattes proving very popular! We have also enjoyed a visit from some very special Pomeranian dogs. The residents absolutely adored them, and it was wonderful to see the smiles, conversations and memories that the visit created. 🐶❤️

We also had a fantastic summer show with Michael Burke, who brought a wonderful variety performance to the home, including his talking dolls. It was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Michael was particularly attentive and inclusive with our residents living with more advanced cognitive impairment and dementia, taking the time to engage with them individually and ensure everyone could be part of the experience. His kindness and approach were greatly appreciated.

🍽️ Celebrating Culture and Diversity

Our Cultural Tuesdays continue to be a much-loved part of life at the home. Every other week, we explore a different culture through food, conversation, activities and learning. This gives us the opportunity to celebrate the backgrounds and traditions that are important to our residents and to encourage everyone to share their own experiences and memories.

We recently celebrated Jamaican Independence Day, with crafts, activities, conversations and learning about Jamaican culture and history. 🇯🇲 It was a wonderful opportunity for residents and staff to come together and celebrate.

We have also enjoyed a meal out at a local Chinese restaurant, which some of our residents thoroughly enjoyed. One resident also had the opportunity to go shopping at Walthamstow Market a lovely example of supporting residents to continue enjoying everyday community experiences that are meaningful to them. 🛍️

⛪ Faith and Community

We have continued to welcome ladies from the local church, who regularly spend time with our residents. We have also enjoyed communion within the home. These visits provide valuable opportunities for companionship, conversation, reflection and maintaining important community and faith connections.

💧 Keeping Our Residents Comfortable and Hydrated

With the recent very warm weather, hydration has been a particular focus. Our daily hydration programme offers residents a wide variety of drinks throughout the day, helping to encourage regular fluid intake and making sure there are plenty of choices available.

We have also worked hard to keep the home as comfortable as possible during the hot weather, using industrial fans and closely monitoring residents’ comfort.

We are very pleased to share that plans have also been agreed for air conditioning to be installed in the coming weeks. We are looking forward to this improvement, particularly as we prepare for future summers.

👩‍🏫 Investing in Our Staff

Our staff have continued to show tremendous commitment to our residents, constantly engaging, interacting and encouraging participation in activities throughout the day.

The team recently completed Olivia McGowan training, which was a real eye-opener and provided some excellent learning and ideas for supporting our residents even more effectively. We are very proud of our staff and their ongoing commitment to developing their knowledge and skills.

🌟 Making Our Environment More Meaningful

We are also beginning some exciting new projects within the home. We are looking at transforming some of our corridors into more visual, engaging communal spaces, so that when residents are walking around the home or moving between different areas, there are interesting and meaningful things to look at, talk about and engage with.

We are also looking at developing our lounge areas to make them more visual, stimulating and accessible, particularly for residents with increased cognitive and sensory needs.

Our aim is to create an environment that is not simply somewhere to live, but somewhere that provides interest, stimulation, familiarity and opportunities for connection throughout the day. ❤️

🎉 Activities Continue to Thrive

Our in-house activities continue to be varied, inclusive, meaningful and, most importantly, enjoyable. We have had plenty of opportunities for music, crafts, conversations, entertainment, cultural activities, social interaction and time spent together.

Our staff continue to adapt activities around individual interests and abilities, making sure residents are encouraged to participate in ways that are right for them.

🌊 Looking Ahead

We are now getting excited about our September outing! We are currently deciding between a trip to the seaside or a visit to the zoo, and we hope to confirm our plans by the end of this week.

Relatives, please keep an eye out for further emails with details and to confirm whether your loved one would like to join us.

We are also hoping to enjoy a barbecue very soon. The recent heat has made outdoor cooking difficult at times, particularly as the basement can become extremely warm, but we are keeping our fingers crossed for a cooler day so that residents can enjoy one together. 🌭☀️

Overall, it has been a really lovely period at the home. We are incredibly proud of the way our residents, staff, families and visitors continue to come together to create a warm, inclusive and engaging community.

Thank you to our wonderful staff for everything they do each day to make life at the home joyful, meaningful and person-centred. And thank you to our families and community visitors for continuing to be such an important part of our residents’ lives.
