Ahhh the dreaded ‘S’ word…
It always seems to be hanging around these days. We can’t seem to shake it.
Some wear it as a badge of honour, while it wears out the rest of us.
It keeps us alert, yet it exhausts us.
It can give us a ‘rush’, yet it burdens us when rushed.
It makes us run faster, yet also cripples us.
In small doses, it saves us. But too much of it is killing us.

We know what to do, but it’s the last thing on our priority list.

You can feel it in your chest as you read this.

It wakes us up; it keeps us up from sleep. It makes our heart beat fast, and our shoulders ache.
It makes our stomachs churn and affects fertility.
It causes us more pain and less peace, yet we’ll likely continue to do nothing about it.

Day 4 of Women’s Health Week: Mind Matter’s

A few thoughts…

How’s the timing for this one? It’s RUOK day today (srsly are you really ok?) and this month is Liptember AND we’re in the middle of the worst lockdown Melbourne’s experienced yet… 🤯

I don’t know how to approach this topic to be honest. Any motivational words from sound somewhat…forced and trivial.
I mean, being ok at the moment is kind of ironic, isn’t it? The definition of “ok” seems to be redefined 30 times in one day for most of us!

Sure, I guess most of us are “Ok” - we’re getting out of bed in the morning (amazing stuff), we’re finding the small joys in our morning walk and coffee, we’re starting to feel the warmth of the sun on our skin, and many of us are trying our hardest to make magic out of 💩.

But are we really “Ok”? Is any of this “Ok”?

I’m noticing a general sense of fatigue amongst my patients at the moment. What was originally fear and anxiety, many have now resigned to a general sense of apathy…
Have we given up? Or are we just trying to protect ourselves? Are we all just tired?

I’ll be the first person to put my hand up and admit I’ve withdrawn. Withdrawn from the news, from the carousel of monotonous pandemic chats, the daily numbers… and my gosh it’s been refreshing! ✨

Ironically, months ago withdrawing meant negativity, panic, depression. Yet these days, many who I speak to about this topic have withdrawn purely to create space for healing, clarity, positivity.

I’m merely sharing my personal observation today, but hope you can take solace from my message:
- It’s ok to withdraw sometimes, we all need to recharge. A simple reply to a caring friend explaining “I’m ok, just taking a break” will do (can be a copy and paste job).
- Listen to yourself. Are you tired? What do you need?
- Work out your triggers at the moment - do you feel worse after hearing the news or being on social media?
- Are you doing what you can to gently look after yourself?

Of course, we still need to ask our loved ones if they are ok. Just remember. you also need to ask yourself if you are ok.

Side note: Totally not what I intended to write, but sometimes you just have to let it flow ✨🎢
