Hormones help regulate your menstrual cycle, metabolism, mood, skin, fertility, and many other body functions. When they’re out of balance, the symptoms can vary depending on which hormone is affected.
The symptoms include:
👉 Irregular Periods
Periods that are unusually heavy, very light, infrequent, or stop altogether may be a sign of a hormonal imbalance affecting ovulation.
👉 Difficulty Getting Pregnant
Hormonal disorders can interfere with ovulation, making conception more difficult.
👉 Unexplained Weight Gain or Difficulty Losing Weight
Hormonal conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS), or Cushing’s syndrome can affect metabolism and fat storage.
👉 Excessive Hair Growth (Hirsutism)
Higher androgen (male hormone) levels can cause coarse hair growth on the face, chest, abdomen, or back. This is commonly seen in PCOS.
👉 Hair Thinning or Hair Loss
Hormonal changes can shorten the hair growth cycle or cause hair follicles to shrink, leading to thinning, particularly over the crown of the scalp.
👉 Acne That Persists Beyond the Teenage Years
Androgens increase oil production in the skin, making acne more likely, especially around the jawline and chin.
👉 Hot Flushes and Night Sweats
Falling oestrogen levels during perimenopause and menopause commonly cause sudden episodes of heat and excessive sweating.
👉 Mood Changes
Hormonal fluctuations can contribute to low mood, anxiety, irritability, or emotional changes, although these symptoms have many possible causes.
👉 Persistent Fatigue
Hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism or adrenal disorders can affect energy levels and cause ongoing tiredness.
👉 Reduced S*x Drive
Changes in oestrogen, testosterone, or other hormones can affect libido.
👉 Vaginal Dryness
Lower oestrogen levels can reduce natural lubrication, causing dryness and discomfort during s*x.
👉 Milk Discharge From the Breasts (When Not Pregnant or Breastfeeding)
This may occur with hyperprolactinaemia, where raised prolactin levels can also cause irregular or absent periods.
‼️ These symptoms don’t always mean you have a hormonal imbalance. They can have many different causes. If symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting your daily life, it’s important to seek medical assessment.
