Few female artists have risen to become global icons but Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo is undoubtedly one of these exceptions. A fearless revolutionary, her bold use of colour, striking self-portraits and depiction of pain and passion, became her trademarks.
Frida’s work has inspired a generation of artists and also piqued the interest of a modern generation, including The Vale’s residents, one of whom suggested her as a subject for our latest art class.
The group worked in near silence as they picked up their acrylic paints and began to create their own pieces. This was unusual as there is generally much chatter and laughter during these session. The concentration was palpable.
Bright, bold colours, were very much in evidence - pinks and yellows, bringing a distinctly Mexican feel to the paintinges. Some recreated Frida’s unmistakable heavy eyebrows, flowers in her hair and others included a few dancing butterflies.
The results were really quite striking and once the brushes where down, the familiar babble of conversation and giggles ensued.
Our residents’ work has seen enormous progress as most have moved from complete beginners to increasingly confident and accomplished artists.
Some of Frida Kahlo’s work is currently on display at Tate Modern: ‘Frida Kahlo: The Making of an Icon’ until 3 January.
