Why does Nicole Kidman look “AI-generated” in her latest British Vogue shoot?
⠀
I was recently asked by HELLO! Magazine to give my perspective as a London plastic surgeon on the discussion surrounding Nicole Kidman’s striking appearance in her latest British Vogue images.
⠀
When people describe a face as looking “AI-generated”, they are often responding to an unusually uniform appearance — very even skin texture, minimal visible pores or fine lines, controlled lighting and subtle tonal variation.
⠀
But does that necessarily mean cosmetic surgery or aesthetic treatment? Not at all.
Professional lighting, make-up, photography, digital retouching and increasingly sophisticated post-production can dramatically alter how a face appears in an editorial image. It is therefore important not to assume that a particular appearance is the result of surgery or injectable treatments simply from photographs.
⠀
It was interesting to contribute a plastic surgeon’s perspective to this conversation and to discuss how our perception of beauty is changing in the age of AI and highly polished digital imagery.
