There’s one question that will tell you more about your relationship than any argument ever could.
It’s not “Are you okay?”
It’s: “How have I been to live with recently?”
Say it out loud. Notice how differently it lands.
Here’s the uncomfortable truth: the answer is rarely as good as we think.
We remember our intentions. Our partner remembers our impact.
That gap, between what we meant and what they felt, is where relationships quietly break.
Not through big betrayals.
Through a thousand small moments of not really seeing each other. A short temper after work. A joke that landed wrong. A conversation you meant to have and didn’t.
None of it looks like a crisis. All of it adds up to one.
The couples who last aren’t the ones who never hurt each other. That couple doesn’t exist.
They’re the ones brave enough to ask the hard question, and humble enough to actually listen to the answer without defending themselves.
So tonight, try it.
Ask your partner: “How have I been to live with recently?”
Then do the harder part.
Just listen. Don’t explain. Don’t defend. Just listen.
