✨Hello Instagram… it’s been a while✨

After four years away, I’ve decided to return to this space – and a lot has changed in that time! I’ve been studying hard and now have nearly ten years of training behind me.

I’ve been deep in the world of studying, training, seeing lots of amazing clients, writing essays, drinking too much tea, and becoming a psychotherapist (nearly ten years of training later… here we are!).

I currently work in private practice and with some incredible charities – supporting children, teenagers, and adults through all kinds of life stuff. That might look like anxiety, low mood, identity issues, grief, relationship struggles, big feelings, or the lingering impact of childhood experiences.

I genuinely love what I do – it’s such a privilege to walk alongside people as they figure things out, heal, and reconnect with who they really are.

I’m not entirely sure what this space will become – maybe a place to share thoughts, reflections, or glimpses into the world of therapy – or maybe just a home for gentle reminders and a little bit of human connection. For now, I’m just happy to be back!

Worries can contaminate our minds. When we allow these worries to consume us, we often feel flooded with fear and anxiety. We are so focused on the possibilities of what may happen in the future, often catastrophic worries and thoughts, rather than what is happening right now. None of us have the power to know exactly how our life is going to turn out, what may happen tomorrow, in the next hour, even in the next minute. This is out of our control. How about letting go of the need to ‘know’ and to be in ‘control’ and to allow yourself to sit with the discomfort of not knowing. It is a universal feeling we all have to tolerate and sit with in our life. Being okay with not knowing is about letting yourself feel some discomfort around uncertainty but that doesn’t mean we have to let it consume us. We are made up of lots of parts and the part of us that fears the future and any the unknown just needs some reassurance that it’s ok to feel like this. We also need to trust that we have the resources inside of us to deal with whatever comes our way, the challenges we are faced with and obstacles we may be confronted by. Also, how about reflecting on each time you worried about the future or something that wasn’t in your control. How did it turn out? Things always seem to work out and even if it isn’t in the way that we want them to. So we need to learn to trust that things will fall in to place. That the worries in our head are not true, they aren’t a fact and they even stop us from enjoying what is true right now, what is happening and what we have control over in this moment. The interesting thing is that when we learn to let go of our need to be on control, we often feel more in control of ourselves because we are not letting the worries and anxiety control us.

Self reflection creative exercise.

When we draw images, it helps us access the part of our brain that we wouldn’t be able to access using just words or speech. If you want to go deeper in exploring aspects of yourself, drawing images can help us to look at hidden parts of yourself that you lacked awareness in.

Gregg Furth says that ‘to know ourselves we need to bring into consciousness what is submerged in our unconscious’. You may think that what you are drawing is a meaningless piece of art but somewhere there will be a few hidden meaning behind your image and it’s a way of you uncovering parts of your awareness that has been locked away for various reasons in the unconscious. The more you learn about yourself, the more you will be able to make sense of yourself. All of these parts and experiences make up you and your uniqueness. Feeling satisfied and fulfilled from within involves inner work of exploring all the different parts of you so that you can learn to integrate and love all of those parts. A big part of the therapy process is about digging deeper and understanding who you are, and how your experiences have shaped you as well as looking at who you want to be.

Have a go at this self reflection exercise. This sort of exercise will give you an insight in to how I work as a therapist. Sessions with me are rarely just sitting in a room and talking! With children, adolescents or adults I always bring in some form of creative intervention. Let me know how you get on❤️ Eliza x

“Whenever you find yourself doubting how far you can go, just remember how far you have come. Remember everything you have faced, all the battles you have won, and all the fears you have overcome”

This photo takes me back to a year ago. I was sat in a restaurant and it was the first time in months that I had been out with my family. I had a smile on my face in that photo, but internally I felt a deep sense of pain and was going through something in my personal life I would not want anyone to have to go through, on top of a pandemic. But I am proud of that me. That me that kept on going with everything despite all the challenges and fears along the way. In the last year I have:

- Had a successful private practice that I started up a year ago
- I have nearly completed the first 2 years of my Masters in Child and Adolescent psychotherapy
- I have nearly completed a year of clinical work in placements with children and young people who are suffering from trauma and emotional distress.
- Given myself permission to be ‘good enough’ and I am slowly starting to accept all the different parts of me, despite it being an ongoing process and lots more work to be done.

All of my experiences of pain has given me even more of a drive to continue with the work that I am doing. I have realised that my job is the one job that I am able to have where I can help others to realise that healing is possible. That there is light when you feel your life is full of darkness. That surviving difficult times only makes you stronger to be able to overcome future challenges. I have learnt from my own experiences that happiness does and can exist and you can write your own script about what your future life is going to look like. Past traumas doesn’t mean that you need to be stuck in them. You are allowed to let go of the old feelings and reactions you had to them and to build a fulfilling, satisfying and happy life for yourself.

There is so much shame around being proud of yourself. We very easily say to others, ‘you should be so proud of yourself’ but why can’t we say it to ourselves? What messages have you learnt that has stopped you from prizing yourself for how far you have come?
