One exercise to regulate your emotions:
There is you ....and your thoughts, and feelings (e.g.negative, self-critical, judgemental etc.)
Try to separate them for a bit and see them from another perspective:
You are not your thoughts and feelings.
You are you, and you have thoughts and feelings that keep coming and changing.
An important thing to remember....you don't have to allow your thoughts and feelings to guide you, and to be pulled away by them.
You can question them, evaluate them, see them from different angles....
So you can ask yourself...
Is there another explanation?
Could there be another way to understand this thought?
What if the thought is not even true, or only part of it is true?
Can I do something about it, or not?
If I can, what would that be?
When you start asking these questions, you start looking at things from a different angle and activate your cognitive functions in your brain.
When this happens the emotional part of your brain begins to be less activated.
This exercise is one from many...but it could be one step to observe and understand yourself differently.
