Apasen Featured in Prestigious Monarchy & Democracy: A History of Leadership Publication

Apasen is delighted to announce that our organisation has been featured in the prestigious Monarchy & Democracy: A History of Leadership, a landmark publication produced by the History of Parliament in partnership with St James's House. The publication celebrates organisations that have demonstrated excellence in leadership, governance, innovation and social impact, alongside exploring the development of democracy across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

Being featured in this publication is a significant achievement for Apasen. It reflects the organisation's longstanding commitment to supporting people with disabilities and additional needs, while recognising our contribution to creating more inclusive communities through high quality care and support services.

The feature tells the story of Apasen's journey from its beginnings in 1984, when a group of parents came together to address the lack of appropriate services for children with complex needs, to becoming one of London's leading health and social care providers. Today, Apasen supports children, young people and adults from diverse communities across several London boroughs, empowering them to live with dignity, independence and choice.

Representing Apasen at the official launch event held at Westminster Abbey were Mahmud Hasan MBE, Chief Executive, and Luqueman Hussain, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. The prestigious event brought together over 500 guests, including parliamentarians, business leaders, academics, charitable organisations and members of the media to celebrate the publication's release.

The event also provided an excellent opportunity for Apasen to network with influential leaders and organisations from across the UK, strengthening relationships and exploring future opportunities for collaboration. It was a proud occasion to showcase Apasen's work on a national stage and highlight the positive impact the organisation continues to make in supporting people with disabilities.

Apasen Champions Collaboration at Disabled People’s Network Event

On 03 February, Apasen hosted a vibrant and inclusive networking event at the Brady Arts Centre, bringing together partners of the Disabled People’s Network, commissioned by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH), alongside community organisations, professionals and service providers. The event focused on connection, collaboration and shared learning, highlighting Apasen’s continued commitment to amplifying the voices of disabled people and strengthening partnerships that support inclusion, accessibility and wellbeing across the borough.

The event was attended by a wide range of stakeholders, including representatives from transport, health and voluntary sector organisations, as well as members of staff from partner organisations, including colleagues from Apasen OZ. Mahmud Hasan MBE, Chief Executive of Apasen, was present throughout the event, engaging with attendees and reinforcing the importance of collective action and partnership working in addressing the challenges faced by disabled people.

Among the speakers were Simon Shone from Bike Works, who spoke about inclusive cycling initiatives and the role of accessible transport in supporting independence; Mohammed Badruddoza from DLR, who shared insights into transport accessibility and engagement with disabled passengers; and Reshma Karia alongside Syanne Warburton from Tower Hamlets Talking Therapies, who highlighted the importance of accessible, responsive mental health services. Their contributions encouraged discussion and reflection, underlining the value of cross-sector collaboration in creating meaningful and lasting change.

The event also featured cultural performances by Apasen learners, which were warmly received and celebrated the creativity, confidence and talents of disabled people. Interactive games and informal activities created a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging participation, conversation and relationship-building among attendees. Throughout the event, there were opportunities for networking and the exchange of ideas, with Apasen playing a central role in facilitating dialogue and ensuring that disabled people’s perspectives remained at the heart of discussions.

Speaking at the event, Mahmud Hasan MBE emphasised the importance of strong networks and open dialogue, noting that the LBTH-commissioned Disabled People’s Network provides a vital platform for bringing together lived experience, professional expertise and service providers. He highlighted Apasen’s pride in leading the network on behalf of the council and its ongoing commitment to partnership working that delivers real impact for disabled people and their families.

The New Year networking event set a positive and collaborative tone for the year ahead, leaving attendees with renewed connections, fresh ideas and a shared sense of purpose. Through its leadership of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets–commissioned Disabled People’s Network and its continued work with partners across sectors, Apasen reaffirmed its role as a key driver of inclusion, advocacy and community-led change across the borough.

সম্প্রতি টাওয়ার হ্যামলেটস কাউন্সিল কর্তৃক প্রকাশিত "হোমকেয়ার কন্ট্রাক্ট অ্যাওয়ার্ড স্টেটমেন্ট" শীর্ষক একটি বিবৃতি আপাসেনের নজরে এসেছে। উক্ত বিবৃতিতে আপাসেনের নাম উল্লেখ করে একাধিক বিষয় উত্থাপিত হয়েছে, যা সংস্থার পক্ষ থেকে স্পষ্ট ও যথাযথ ব্যাখ্যার দাবি রাখে।

Apasen response to Homecare contract award statement made from LBTH Council


Apasen is aware of a press release issued by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets(LBTH) headed Homecare Contract Award Statement, in which it is named.

Apasen denies that the account given by LBTH properly reflects the circumstances, the background to which is Apasen’s legal claim against the lawfulness of an LBTH procurement exercise last year, in the face of which LBTH abandoned the exercise. Through that process and subsequently, Apasen has frequently sought meaningful information from LBTH, but LBTH has maintained a cloak of secrecy which is unwarranted and contrary to the public interest.

Apasen has nothing to hide. It is taking legal advice about how best to compel LBTH to abide by its obligations under the Procurement Act 2023, which it has failed to do.

Apasen is deeply concerned about the impact of LBTH’s press release on vulnerable service users, who have expressed anxiety about the continuity of care, and on its own employees. It is confident that it will be vindicated and is seeking advice on issuing a further statement addressing the specifics of the LBTH press release and the underlying issues.

From Reflection to Action: Apasen Managers’ Away Day 2025

On the 9th and 10th of May 2025, Apasen hosted its annual Managers’ Away Day at The Palms Hotel in Hornchurch. This two-day event brought together leadership teams from across the organisation, including colleagues from Home and Community Services, Day Care Centres, Apasen Lodge, Information, Advice and Advocacy, Finance, HR, Media and Communications, and Training, along with Chief Operating Officer Mark Foulds.

The away day provided a valuable opportunity for reflection, learning, and strategic alignment. After a warm welcome and check-in on Friday afternoon, attendees gathered in the conference room for the official opening. Apasen’s Chief Executive, Mahmud Hasan MBE, delivered an inspiring welcome speech, reminding everyone that:

“Our strength as an organisation lies not just in what we do, but in how we do it — with empathy, unity, and a shared purpose.”

This sentiment set the tone for a dynamic and purposeful series of training sessions led by Paul Bragman, a highly experienced facilitator known for his work on leadership and organisational development.

The training sessions spanned a range of key themes, including:

- Strengthening team cohesion and collaboration across services
- Embedding Apasen’s core values into daily practice
-Enhancing leadership effectiveness through self-awareness and action planning

Over two days, managers participated in group exercises, open discussions, and action-oriented workshops. The agenda was carefully structured to balance intensive learning opportunities — ranging from informal networking over light snacks to thoughtful evening reflections.

One of the standout aspects of the event was the focus on translating reflection into action. Managers were encouraged to identify specific steps they would take to build stronger teams, deliver more impactful services, and champion Apasen’s mission within their respective departments.

Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive. Many described the experience as “energising,” “insightful,” and “a much-needed space to reset and reconnect.”

As Apasen continues to grow and evolve, events like the Managers’ Away Day play a crucial role in uniting leadership around a common vision — one where compassion, accountability, and innovation shape every aspect of service delivery.

Carers’ Drop-In Session: A Platform for Support and Engagement

On 02 April, Apasen hosted a successful Carers’ Drop-In Session, providing an invaluable opportunity for carers to share their experiences, concerns, and suggestions in an open and supportive environment. The event, which took place as part of Apasen’s ongoing commitment to carer support, was attended by several key members of the organisation, including Chief Executive Mahmud Hasan MBE.

One of the highlights of the session was the Carers’ Tea Session with Managers, where carers had the opportunity to directly engage with Apasen’s Home and Community Services (HCS) leadership team. Mahmud Hasan MBE took the time to listen attentively to carers’ issues, ensuring that their voices were heard at the highest level. The interactive discussion allowed carers to share their perspectives on challenges they face and how Apasen can continue to support them effectively.

Mahmud Hasan MBE reflected on Apasen’s journey, stating, “For over 40 years, Apasen has remained persistent in its mission to serve and uplift the community. Our journey has been one of resilience, growth, and firm dedication. No negativity will deter us from our quest to achieve our aims and objectives. We will continue to provide essential support, empower carers, and ensure that our services reach those who need them the most.”

Key HCS members of staff present at the event included Munira Parvin, Project Manager for Home & Community Services, Rema Ali, Trainee Project Manager for Home & Community Services (LBTH), Mark Foulds, Chief Operating Officer, and Ather Khan, HR Manager. Their active participation in the session demonstrated Apasen’s dedication to enhancing services and welfare support for carers.

The Drop-In Session will continue until April 3rd, offering more carers the chance to engage with the organisation and access the support they need. Apasen remains devoted in its mission to empower and uplift carers, recognising the crucial role they play in the community.
