Reflection in Therapeutic Practice

Reflection is a fundamental aspect of ethical and effective therapeutic practice. It extends beyond reviewing interventions; it involves examining our thoughts, emotions, assumptions, values, and relational processes to deepen clinical understanding and enhance client care.

Reflective practice supports therapists in recognising transference and countertransference, maintaining appropriate boundaries, identifying potential biases, and making thoughtful, evidence-informed clinical decisions. It also promotes cultural humility, professional accountability, and ongoing competence.

Engaging in regular reflection—whether independently, through clinical supervision, or in peer consultation—strengthens self-awareness, reduces the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue, and fosters resilience within the profession.

Reflective questions for therapists:
• What was happening for the client during this session?
• What was happening for me?
• How did our therapeutic relationship influence the work?
• What informed my clinical decisions?
• What might I explore differently in future sessions?

Reflection is not simply looking back; it is an intentional process that transforms clinical experience into professional growth, benefiting both therapist and client.

When you read because you enjoy it, rather than because you have to, it can:

* Give your mind a break from constant demands and notifications.
* Reduce stress by helping you focus on a single, engaging activity.
* Spark curiosity, creativity, or imagination.
* Provide comfort, escapism, or perspective through stories and ideas.
* Create a calming routine, especially before bed.

Self-care doesn’t have to mean expensive treatments or elaborate routines. It can be as simple as making time for activities that genuinely replenish you. For many people, curling up with a good novel, revisiting a favorite author, or exploring a topic they’re curious about is exactly that.
If reading leaves you feeling rested, inspired, or more connected to yourself, then it is serving as self-care. Even reading for just 10–20 minutes can be a meaningful way to unwind. Read a book today.

Do you constantly keep yourself busy till you are exhausted day in day out? Do you feel guilty you are not doing enough despite being on the go all day? Do you want to stop wearing yourself out? Do not anchor your worth or sense of safety to patterns that keep you in chronic stress.

People-pleasing for acceptance or love can become one of those patterns. It manifests itself in being constantly on the go, doing activities exceedingly until there are no more hours in the day. What are you distracting yourself from? What is the issue you are avoiding?

Strengthening your self-worth makes it easier to be authentic instead of operating from fear.

The underlying idea aligns with research on self-esteem, self-compassion, and authenticity: when a person’s sense of worth depends heavily on external approval, it can contribute to ongoing psychological stress.

Developing a more stable, internal sense of self-worth can make it easier to set boundaries, be genuine, and respond to challenges with less emotional strain.

It is not a cure-all, but it can be an important part of reducing chronic stress. Contact 07503318241 to support you make the change. Online and inperson appointments available. 📸 M Allen

Could we be among the luckiest generations in history?

Never before have so many people had access to knowledge, healthcare, technology, and opportunities to shape their own lives.

While many challenges remain and these advantages are not shared equally, those with health, freedom, and the chance to build a fulfilling life have much to appreciate.
