Verapamil is NOT just another calcium channel blocker 👀

This is one of the most high-yield cardio pharma distinctions for USMLE Step 1:

🫀 Verapamil = works mainly on the HEART
↓ Heart rate
↓ AV conduction
↓ Contractility

That’s why it’s used for rate control, especially in SVT ⚡

But don’t forget the side effects:
⚠️ Bradycardia
⚠️ AV block
⚠️ Constipation
⚠️ Worsening heart failure

🔥 Exam trick:
Verapamil = heart
Amlodipine = vessels

And be careful combining Verapamil with beta-blockers because both can slow the heart too much.

Save this before your cardio pharma review ❤️

Getting questions wrong is not the problem.
Repeating the same mistake without reviewing it properly is the problem.

Most students review incorrect questions by reading the explanation once and moving on. But that’s not real review.

A better method:

1️⃣ Identify the mistake
Was it a knowledge gap, misread detail, weak concept, or confusion between two similar diseases?

2️⃣ Explain the answer
Before rereading the full explanation, try to explain why the correct answer is right in your own words.

3️⃣ Study the wrong options
Wrong answers are not useless. They teach you differential diagnosis.

4️⃣ Connect it to a topic
Link the mistake back to First Aid, Pathoma, Sketchy, or your main notes.

5️⃣ Create one rule
Turn the mistake into one short exam rule you can apply next time.

6️⃣ Repeat it later
Come back after a few days. If you can answer it correctly and explain it, that mistake has become knowledge.

Don’t just solve more questions.
Review smarter.

Furosemide is one of the most high-yield diuretics for USMLE Step 1 🔥

If you see acute pulmonary edema, think loop diuretic.

Mechanism:
Blocks Na⁺/K⁺/2Cl⁻ transporter in the thick ascending loop of Henle → massive water and sodium loss 💧

Side effects? Remember: OHH DAANG
👂 Ototoxicity
⬇️ Hypokalemia
⬇️ Hypomagnesemia
💧 Dehydration
⚠️ Sulfa allergy

And the exam trick:
Loops lose Ca²⁺
Thiazides keep Ca²⁺

If you want to understand pharmacology instead of memorizing random facts…

DM “USMLE” and let’s make Step 1 easier 📩

Step 1 is hard… but sometimes we make it harder than it needs to be.

The problem is not always the amount of information.
Most of the time, it’s the method.

Too many students study with:
❌ No clear plan
❌ Passive First Aid reading
❌ Delayed UWorld practice
❌ Memorization without connection
❌ Weak foundations that never get fixed

And then they wonder why everything feels overwhelming.

Step 1 becomes much easier when you study with structure, active recall, clinical connections, and a clear revision strategy.

Save this carousel before your next study reset.
And comment “STEP 1” if you want guidance on how to build a smarter study plan.

Losartan = the “NO cough” blood pressure medication 👀

If the question gives you:

✅ Hypertension
✅ Diabetic nephropathy
✅ Kidney protection
✅ Hyperkalemia
✅ No dry cough

Think: Losartan = ARB

High-yield USMLE trick:
Losartan blocks AT1 receptors, so it decreases vasoconstriction and aldosterone.

But unlike ACE inhibitors, it does NOT increase bradykinin, which means:

👉 Much less cough
👉 Much less angioedema

This is why Losartan is commonly used when patients cannot tolerate ACE inhibitors like Enalapril.

Want to finally understand RAAS + pharmacology without memorizing randomly?

DM “USMLE” and I’ll help you build a clear study plan 📩

Hantavirus 🦠

A few hantavirus cases are enough to remind us: rare does not mean impossible.

For medical students, this is one of those infections you should recognize fast:

Rodent exposure
Fever + myalgia
Progressive shortness of breath
Possible pulmonary edema or shock

High-yield point: Hantavirus is transmitted mainly through inhalation of aerosolized rodent urine, droppings, or saliva — not usually person-to-person.

Save this reel for infectious disease revision 🦠
DM USMLE if you want help studying high-yield infections the right way.
