Some people need time to regulate their emotions, gather their thoughts or avoid saying something they’ll regret.

The silent treatment is different. It is a repeated pattern of withdrawing communication to create uncertainty, distress or an imbalance of power. Rather than resolving conflict, it leaves the other person feeling confused, anxious and emotionally disconnected.

Healthy space invites repair. The silent treatment withholds it.

So many people ask me how to respond when someone speaks to them with contempt, sarcasm or subtle put-downs.

One of the most effective communication skills isn’t having the perfect comeback. It’s knowing how to slow the moment down.

A calm, respectful question can shift the dynamic, encourage accountability and help you stay connected to your own self-respect.

Healthy communication isn’t about winning. It’s about setting clear boundaries without losing yourself in the process.

As a psychotherapist and communication coach, I help people develop the confidence to navigate difficult conversations, strengthen relationships and communicate with clarity, calm and self-respect.

Have you ever tried this approach? I’d love to hear how it worked for you.

We rarely see people as they are. We see them as we are.

The qualities that move us in another, and the ones that unsettle us, are often parts of ourselves asking to be met. What you admire, you are ready to become. What you resist usually holds something you have not yet made peace with. The other person becomes a mirror, and your response becomes the quiet revelation of your own inner landscape.

This is not a reason for blame. It is an invitation to look inward. When you soften toward what someone stirs in you, you are no longer reacting to them. You are a step closer to yourself.

Fear isn’t what’s stopping you.
It’s the agreement you’ve made with it.

At some point you didn’t just feel fear, you believed it. You let it decide what was safe, what was possible, and who you could be.

But fear isn’t truth.
It’s memory.
It’s protection.
It’s a voice trying to keep things familiar.

And familiar isn’t always right.

So ask yourself.
why am I afraid?
why have I believed it for so long?

Short exercise

Take a moment and write down

1. One thing you want right now but are hesitating to move towards
2. What fear is saying about it, write it exactly as it sounds in your head
3. Then ask yourself
Is this fact or is it something I’ve learned to believe
When have I felt this before
Who would I be without this thought

Now finish this sentence

If I didn’t believe this fear, I would

Sit with whatever comes up. No need to fix it or change it. Just notice.

What’s sitting underneath your hesitation?

If you truly want it… why does something in you hold back?

Patterns aren’t random. They’re learned, repeated, protected.

So the question isn’t just what do I want?
It’s what part of me is afraid to have it?

Notice the pattern.
That’s where the work begins.

Fear keeps you safe but it also keeps you stuck.

It dresses itself up as logic, timing, responsibility.
But underneath, it’s just a belief:
“I can’t.”

Courage doesn’t remove fear.
It simply refuses to let it lead.

What would shift… if you did the same?

Coming home isn’t a place, it’s a moment.
The moment you soften, slow down, and return to yourself.
Presence is where everything real begins.

Growth asks us to look back, not to judge, but to understand. Every version of you was doing the best it could with what it had. Let that be enough.
