Your hairline is thinning… but is it really traction alopecia?

Traction alopecia is common, especially with hairstyles that place repeated tension on the hairline. However, not all hairline thinning is caused by traction.

Conditions such as frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), CCCA and pattern hair loss can sometimes look similar—but they require very different treatments.

If you are noticing changes to your hairline, persistent shedding, scalp symptoms or areas where hair is not growing back, seek assessment from a dermatologist experienced in hair loss.

Early diagnosis can help protect your hair.

I am excited to launch a monthly teaching clinic for medical students, with a focus on skin of colour and Afro-textured hair disorders — areas that remain underrepresented in medical education.

My aim is to provide students with more exposure to the diagnosis and management of dermatological conditions across all skin tones and hair types.

Many people know that sunscreen protects against UVA and UVB, but fewer realise that visible light can also worsen pigmentation—particularly in skin of colour.

The iron oxides in tinted mineral sunscreens provide additional protection against visible light, making them an important part of a hyperpigmentation treatment plan people of colour.

I was recently featured in Marie Claire discussing traction alopecia and Black hair health - a topic I am incredibly passionate about.

Hair loss in Black women is far more common than many people realise, yet it is often recognised late or dismissed as “just breakage.”

The earlier we identify the cause, the more options we have to protect the hair follicle and preserve long-term hair health.

Hair loss isn’t just cosmetic - it’s medical, and getting the right diagnosis is key.

This patient presented with hair thinning and breakage caused by lichen planopilaris (LPP), a scarring form of hair loss where inflammation targets the hair follicle. Without appropriate treatment, this can lead to permanent hair loss.

Following diagnosis, treatment included topical and oral anti-inflammatories, steroid injections, and oral minoxidil.

With the right medical treatment, inflammatory hair loss can often be stabilised and managed successfully.

If you are experiencing hair shedding, thinning, scalp symptoms, or breakage, seeking an accurate diagnosis as early as possible can change everything.
