Sharon went on this trip knowing her gut or skin symptoms might flare.

And they did.

But this time, the symptoms didn’t get to decide what the trip became.

She noticed the fear without letting it take over. She supported herself when she needed to. She adjusted when it made sense.

And she still got to travel across the country, spend time with her best friend, reconnect with people she loves + make memories.

Her biggest takeaway?

“Healed” doesn’t have to mean never experiencing another symptom. It can mean those symptoms no longer rule or limit your life.

THIS is what we mean when we talk about getting your life back. 🤍

If you’re ready for support building a different relationship with your symptoms + moving through recovery with a structured pathway,

comment PATHWAY and we’ll send you more information about the Nervous System Recovery Membership 🤍

Knowing how to calm your nervous system when you’re activated is incredibly valuable.

But knowing how to regulate your nervous system isn’t the same as knowing how to recover.

You can know all the breathing exercises.
You can know how to ground yourself.
You can recognize when you’re outside your window of tolerance and know exactly which tool helps bring you back.

And STILL find yourself getting activated by the same symptoms, situations, emotions + triggers over and over again.

Because regulation is one piece of the work.

At some point, the question can shift from:
“How do I calm myself down when this happens?”

to:

“Why does my nervous system keep responding to this as danger in the first place?”

That’s where deeper retraining + capacity work can come in.

You’re not only supporting yourself once the response happens. You’re working with the patterns underneath it and gradually expanding what your nervous system can experience without tipping into survival mode.

Because ultimately, the goal isn’t to become incredible at managing your nervous system all day.

It’s to build the capacity to participate in more of your actual life.

If you’ve learned the tools but still feel like you’re piecing together your recovery on your own,

comment PATHWAY and we’ll send you more information about the Nervous System Recovery Program. 🤍

Maybe you’re not “too sensitive.” Maybe your nervous system is accurately responding to what it has learned to perceive as overwhelming, threatening, or unsafe.

When your system has spent a long time in protection mode, things that seem small on the outside can create a very real response inside your body.

A conversation.
A change in plans.
A physical sensation.
Someone’s tone.
An emotion you’ve learned isn’t safe to feel.

And when we don’t understand WHY our body is responding that way, it’s easy to make the response mean something about us:

“I’m too emotional.”
“I’m too reactive.”
“Why can’t I handle what everyone else can?”

But your nervous system isn’t trying to make your life harder. It’s responding based on the patterns it has learned.

And those patterns can change.

The work isn’t forcing yourself to “toughen up” or shaming your body into reacting differently.

It’s learning to recognize what your system has labeled as danger, creating new experiences of safety + gradually changing the patterns underneath the response.

You don’t have to spend your life organizing it around what your nervous system currently struggles to tolerate.

Save this for the next time you catch yourself thinking, “Why am I like this?” 🤍

Being strong was probably never the problem.

You learned how to keep going.

To push through exhaustion.
Handle the stressful thing.
Take care of everyone else.
Ignore what you needed.
Figure it out yourself.

And maybe that worked for a really long time.

Until your body started asking for something different.

Because resilience isn’t the ability to carry an unlimited amount of stress without being affected by it.

Real resilience also includes having the capacity to receive support, recover, slow down, and let someone else help carry the load.

And recovery can be really hard to navigate alone, especially when you’re constantly trying to figure out:

Do I rest or gently push myself today?
Do I regulate or retrain?
Is this a flare I should listen to or a pattern I need to challenge?
Am I doing too much or avoiding too much?

That’s one of the reasons support is built into the Nervous System Recovery Pathway.

You’re not just handed a library of nervous system tools and left to figure out how to apply them.

You have a pathway to follow, coaching when you get stuck, and a community of people doing the work alongside you.

You’ve carried enough of this alone. You don’t have to recover alone too.

A hard week doesn’t erase the capacity you’ve built.

And having symptoms again doesn’t mean everything you’ve been doing “stopped working.”

Recovery can look like:
Feeling better → doing more → hitting an edge → recovering → adjusting → trying again.

And every time you move through that cycle, your brain + body have an opportunity to learn something new.

Maybe you recover faster than you used to.

Maybe the flare feels less scary.

Maybe you know what your system needs instead of immediately spiraling.

Maybe something that once took you out for a week now takes a day.

Progress isn’t always fewer symptoms every single day.

Sometimes progress is becoming more capable, confident, and resilient when symptoms do show up.

That’s why the Nervous System Recovery Pathway is designed to meet you at different stages of recovery instead of expecting you to do the same thing forever.

You stabilize. You recondition. You build capacity. You keep expanding.

Stress doesn’t always feel like stress.

Sometimes it looks like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or panic.

Sometimes it looks like digestive issues, headaches, muscle tension, pain, skin flares, or other physical symptoms.

Because your brain and nervous system are constantly taking in information and deciding what may require protection, that response can show up differently from person to person.

Same story. Different location.

And this is why only chasing individual symptoms can sometimes leave you feeling like you’re playing an endless game of whack-a-mole.

One symptom settles down. Another pops up. You try another protocol. Another supplement. Another specialist.

But if learned threat + nervous system dysregulation are part of what’s driving your symptoms, recovery may also require working with the system underneath them.

That’s part of what we do here at Somia: helping you understand your patterns and giving your brain + body the repeated experiences it needs to begin responding differently.

If your symptoms keep shifting, flaring, or showing up in different places, comment “PATHWAY” and we’ll send you more about how the Nervous System Recovery Pathway works. 🤍

Healing doesn’t always look calm, quiet, or controlled.

Sometimes your nervous system needs to complete a response, not suppress it.

That can look like letting yourself cry instead of immediately trying to stop. Moving when your body wants to move. Making sound. Shaking. Breathing. Tapping. Allowing an emotion or sensation to actually pass through instead of tightening around it.

For a nervous system that has learned to brace, suppress, freeze, or stay in control, giving your body permission to respond can be part of teaching it something new:
I’m allowed to feel this.
I’m allowed to respond.
And I’m still safe.

Recovery doesn’t always look like becoming more still.

Sometimes, it looks like finally letting your body move.

The goal of nervous system regulation isn’t to be calm all the time.

It’s to have the capacity to feel without becoming overwhelmed by what you feel.

To experience anger without suppressing it.
Sadness without fearing it.
Excitement without immediately bracing for something to go wrong.
Stress without your entire system getting stuck there.

A regulated nervous system still reacts. It still gets activated. It still experiences the full range of human emotion.

The difference is that it can move through those states and return to safety.

Because healing isn’t about becoming calm enough that nothing affects you.

It’s about building a nervous system that trusts itself to respond, feel, move, and recover.

If you’re ready to move beyond simply managing your nervous system and start building the capacity to actually recover, that’s the work we do inside of HEAL, our complete healing experience with the method, coaching, somatic support, community and clear direction your nervous system was never meant to heal without.

If you feel like you’ve tried everything and your body still isn’t recovering, sometimes the answer isn’t another supplement, protocol, or tool.

Here are 5 patterns worth looking at:

1. Fear + control
Constantly monitoring symptoms, trying to control every variable, or organizing your life around preventing a flare can keep your world getting smaller.

2. Survival environments
It’s difficult to teach your nervous system safety while your relationships, workload, boundaries, or environment are repeatedly overwhelming your capacity.

3. Treating your body like a project
When every sensation becomes something to analyze, fix, track, or eliminate, recovery can become another source of pressure.

4. Avoidance
Avoiding every sensation, emotion, activity, food, conversation, or situation associated with symptoms can reinforce the belief that those experiences are dangerous.

5. Ignoring the patterns underneath
Sometimes symptom management helps, but never reaches the learned responses, emotional patterns, stress physiology, or nervous system patterns contributing to the cycle.

This is why recovery is about more than collecting more tools. It’s learning what your system is doing, why it’s doing it, and how to begin responding differently.

That’s the work we do inside the Nervous System Recovery Pathway.

Comment PATHWAY and we’ll send you the details.
