Not every TMJ problem can be successfully treated with arthroscopy.

In this case, the initial TMJ arthroscopy did not provide the desired relief, and we therefore proceeded to open joint surgery.

The outcome has been extremely encouraging. Following surgery, the patient experienced:
โœ… No further painful locking of the jaw
โœ… Return to a normal diet within a few weeks
โœ… Significant improvement in jaw function
โœ… A very good overall outcome

This case is an important reminder that TMJ treatment needs to be individualised. While arthroscopy can be an excellent minimally invasive treatment for selected patients, some complex or persistent joint problems may require open surgery.
