What can an Upper Abdominal Ultrasound tell you about your health? 🀍

An upper abdominal ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive scan that allows us to assess several important organs and structures within the abdomen.

During the scan, the sonographer may examine:

β€’ Liver β€” including its size, appearance and any focal abnormalities
β€’ Gallbladder & bile ducts β€” including assessment for gallstones and other changes
β€’ Pancreas β€” where visible, its appearance and surrounding structures
β€’ Spleen β€” including its size and appearance
β€’ Kidneys β€” including their size, structure and signs of stones or other abnormalities
β€’ Other visible upper abdominal structures where clinically appropriate

If you’ve been advised to have an abdominal ultrasound or have concerns about your abdominal health, our experienced sonographer is here to guide you through the process and answer your questions.

🀍 Have questions? Send us a DM.

What can a pelvic ultrasound assess? 🀍

A female pelvic ultrasound provides a detailed look at the uterus, endometrium, ovaries and surrounding pelvic structures.

It can help assess:

β€’ Uterus β€” its size, shape, position and appearance, including assessment for fibroids, adenomyosis and other abnormalities.

β€’ Endometrium (uterine lining) β€” its thickness, appearance and regularity, particularly in relation to the menstrual cycle or abnormal bleeding.

β€’ Ovaries β€” their size, morphology and follicle pattern, including assessment for ovarian cysts, polycystic ovarian morphology and other abnormalities.

β€’ Adnexa β€” the areas surrounding the ovaries and fallopian tubes can be assessed for cysts, masses or fluid.

β€’ Pelvic fluid β€” the scan can identify the presence of free fluid within the pelvis.

If you’re experiencing pelvic pain, changes to your menstrual cycle or have concerns about your pelvic health, an ultrasound may provide valuable information to help understand what’s happening.

When might a pelvic ultrasound be recommended?

A pelvic ultrasound is a safe and commonly used scan that can help provide a clearer picture of your pelvic and reproductive health.

It may be recommended if you’re experiencing symptoms such as irregular or heavy periods, pelvic pain or discomfort, fertility concerns, or if further investigation of conditions such as ovarian cysts or fibroids is needed.

At UltraCare Plus, our experienced team provides professional, personalised care in a calm and supportive environment.

20/05/2026

You may have seen recent discussions about the proposed terminology change from PCOS to PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome).

Why does this matter?

Because this condition is much more than ovarian findings alone. It can involve hormonal, metabolic and ovulatory changes affecting overall wellbeing.

One important point: on ultrasound we do not diagnose PMOS/PCOS β€” we assess ovarian morphology and provide information that supports the wider clinical picture.

Medicine continues to evolve, and clearer terminology helps patients better understand their health.
