Sometimes when researching you come across a gem. Observer - 6 Jun 1941 - 4 Death notice of Celia Richards nee Mist, wife of my 2nd great-granduncle.
She recolected "being lifted up to see the ships sailing down the Solent to the Crimea."

Last Sunday I visited to see my 2nd great grandparent's grave.

Whilst there I saw some interesting monuments that were painted figures, ever seen them before.

Are they common?

On this day in 1863, William Debenham, founder of the eponymous store, died at his home in Kensal Rise. The department store chain was founded in 1778 with one London shop at 44 Wigmore Street selling drapery, haberdashery, hosiery, lace, silks and mourning goods and eventually had over 178 premises across the world. William Clark had this original drapers’ shop and he formed a partnership with William Debenham in 1813.
Unfortunately the firm collapsed in 2020 and all of the stores closed the next year. Luckily for historians, a major rescue effort with the collaboration of the heritage and insolvency sectors has secured the future of the historic Debenhams archive. This is now at the City of Westminster Archives Centre, who are now working towards cataloguing the collection so it can be accessible to researchers.

What can one family’s journey reveal about the changing face of 19th-century Britain? 📜✨

Join me for an intriguing talk: All Roads Lead to Tottenham.

Follow an extraordinary 19th-century migration across the UK—from Lincolnshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, Cornwall, Devon, Suffolk, and Essex to Tottenham in North London, and eventually to the USA.

Through genealogy databases, local archives, and inherited family photos, this case study brings to life the working-class stories of a Grocer, a Blacksmith, a Shoemaker, and a Teacher navigating a rapidly shifting world.
