Moving postcards from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Trips don’t always have to be seen as a break from work and life. Sometimes they’re the catalyst that makes life actually run better.

Growing up in Asian culture I was taught working more hours equals better results. The neuroscience says something completely different 🇭🇰

I could spend hours brainstorming at my laptop and come up with no new ideas.

Yet my best ideas always seem to arrive cycling to work, on the underground, or in the shower. 🚿

There’s a reason for that.
Your brain has two modes.

1️⃣ Mode one: active focus. Working hard, concentrating, solving problems. This is obviously useful, but it actually blocks something important.

2️⃣ Mode two, this is where it gets interesting. When you’re not focused on anything specific, your brain switches into what scientists call the default mode network (DMN). 🧠

It’s not switched off. It’s quietly connecting everything you’ve ever learned, experienced, and been thinking about in ways you couldn’t force at a desk. ⏳

That’s why the shower works. Your body is on autopilot and your mind is free.

I used to rush through those in-between hours. The commute, the walk, the time away from a screen. I even called them dead hours.

Now I protect them. I don’t fill every commute with a podcast. I don’t scroll while I’m waiting. I’ve learned to let those in-between hours breathe, because that’s when the best ideas arrive.

Spent the weekend practising diagnostic ultrasound scanning, learning to see inside joints, tendons, muscles and ligaments in real time. 🩻

It’s added a whole new layer to how I assess and explain what’s happening to the people I work with.

I genuinely love that feeling of being in a room learning something new. Always chasing that feeling of discomfort, because that’s where I know I’m growing ☺️

What’s your Health Budget? 📊

You track your rent, food and savings but do you track your health? This missing piece may be costing you more than you think.

A real health budget has 3 things in it:

⏱️ Time: How many hours this week are actually protected for sleep, movement and recovery?

💸 Money: This doesn’t need to be expensive, but what is your monthly spending for your physical health? Your gym, nutrition or whatever keeps your body functioning at its best.

🪫 Energy: Are you protecting your best energy for the things that keep you stable? Your training, your relationships, your time to reset. Or does work take everything and your body gets what’s left?

Most clients I work with don’t struggle with motivation. They don’t have a clear plan for what they actually need to do to get where they want to be.

Your body is the one asset you can never replace. And right now most people are running it with no strategy at all.

💬 What does your health budget look like right now? Let me know in the comments below.

Okay so this book changed how I think about my own body, and I’m a clinician.

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker is one of those reads that makes you put it down every few pages and just sit with what you’ve learned.

Here are the 4 key findings that hit hardest:

1️⃣ You can’t catch up on lost sleep. The Saturday lie-in feels like it fixes things, but Walker’s research shows the long-term damage from a week of short nights is already done. You might feel better. The debt is still there.

2️⃣ Your emotional brain becomes 60% more reactive when you’re sleep-deprived. The snappy reply. The decision that felt harder than it should. The version of yourself you weren’t proud of that day. Check what time you went to bed the night before. It’s almost always related.

3️⃣ One bad night drops your immune defence by 70%. Not your energy. Not your mood. Your actual ability to fight illness, gone by nearly 30% after just 4 hours.

4️⃣ Sleep is where your body actually gets fitter. Not during the session — after it. Walker found athletes sleeping under eight hours are significantly more likely to get injured. As a physio this one hit me the hardest. I see it in clinic constantly and now I understand exactly why.

I used to treat sleep as the thing I’d get to when everything else was done. The reward at the end of a long day rather than the foundation of it.

It’s one of the habits I’m most intentional about protecting now, and one I’m still actively working on.

If you haven’t read it, I would highly recommend adding it to your list. It’s not a long read and it will change how you think about every late night you’ve ever justified.
