The pipe organ has a remarkable ability to fill a sacred space with sound — from the quietest, most delicate tones to something that seems to surround you completely.

Here’s a little taste from the organ at St Michael’s Church, Lewes.

There is something about the sound of a pipe organ in a church that is difficult to replicate anywhere else.

The sound doesn’t simply come from the instrument — it becomes part of the architecture, filling the space and resonating through it.

These are just a few chords from a recent rehearsal at St Michael’s Church, Lewes, as we begin exploring the sound of our next Harmonic Sound Journey.

Every space has its own voice.

A couple of weeks ago, we visited the church for a rehearsal — exploring the sound of the gong within the space and its relationship with the pipe organ and piano.

Every church has its own acoustic, its own character, and its own way of allowing sound to travel.

The gong is at the heart of what we do. Its voice can change dramatically depending on the space around it, and part of creating each Journey is discovering that relationship.

This is where the journey begins.

The 6 foot Offenbach piano in St Michael’s church in Lewes is exceptional!

Here Paul Terry warms up for the rehearsal.

For our events we start with piano and gong, as a gentle warm-up.

And at the end the piano plays with the flute to bring everyone “back down to earth again” ☺️

St Michael’s Church, did you know:

🔹The oldest parts of the church date from the 13th century.

🔹It is listed Grade 1

🎹 The church has an Offenbach 6ft grand piano and it’s a popular concert venue for chamber music groups and choirs.

🎹The organ was built by the renowned London organ maker Alfred Hunter, the organ was restored in 1979 by F H Browne & Son (Canterbury). Then later restored in 2021 by Andrew Cooper and Co, Pipe Organ Builders
