The Buddha laid out a pathway for how to live a good, kind and interconnected life, realising we humans are not above or apart from Nature, but we are Nature.

And compassion is the warm, vibrant thread running through all of this, because if we start from a baseline of compassion – feeling deep empathy for others’ suffering, with a strong intention to help relieve it – we can’t go wrong. 🪷

If you want to be in control all the time, you are probably trying to feel safe – protecting an anxious young part by seeking certainty and control all the time.

But much of life is beyond our control, which means that obsessively seeking control often makes us more anxious, not less.

As a trauma therapist, I know that feeling empathy is not enough to help another person. I hear terrible stories all the time, and I can't let myself get overwhelmed or paralysed by all the suffering I encounter every day. I know the key is taking compassionate action. That means feeling empathy is a first step, then doing whatever I can to relieve suffering comes second.

This helps us move from helplessness and overwhelm to the feeling that we are doing something to help, however small. Our heart trembles, which motivates us to take action and try, in whatever way we can, to relieve some of the suffering we witness from across the globe. ❤️

A little reminder that my first self-help book, Heal Your Trauma, is out in the world. 📖
I put so much time, thought and love into this book and it still feels a little surreal seeing it sitting on my desk.

If you’ve been meaning to pick up a copy, you can find it at all major bookstores now. ❤️

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by all the bad news we’re bombarded with on a daily basis.

If it makes you depressed, try taking compassionate action for a cause you care about. Not only will this make a small but significant difference in the world, it will help you shift from feeling hopeless and helpless to engaged, active and determined to help 💪🏻

Here’s sweet little Juno, feeling like it’s all a bit too much!

There is so much we could all learn from animals – how to rest, fully and deeply. How to be utterly mindful and in the moment. How to be either 100% on, focused and engaged, or 100%% off, relaxed and restful.

Mostly, I just love her because she’s such a gorgeous little ball of fluff! 🐈‍⬛

Self-compassion is a crucial skill for trauma healing. And it is a skill that everyone can learn, however daunting that may seem right now.

From its Buddhist roots, 2,500 years ago, compassion has become a hot topic in Western psychology, with research now proving the many benefits of becoming kinder and more compassionate for both mental and physical health 🧘🏼‍♂️

Here’s a journaling exercise from my new book, Heal Your Trauma. I bet there are countless moments like this in your life, which you either dismiss or ignore because you think they are too small, or that anyone would have done the same. Not true.

To paraphrase Winnie the Pooh, you are kinder than you believe and more loving than you think.

See if you can embrace this more positive notion of yourself as you explore it in your journal ❤️
