Little history of our family run firm and it's past and present managers from 1895 & 1909 to now.
Edward John Rodwell had this yard built in 1925 at 542b Romford Road Forest Gate E7 8AF before here Rodwell & Co was at 539 Romford Road.
As in 1895 Edward John Rodwell was managing J Druitt Monumental Stonemasons at 530 Romford Road and living with his wife Kate and his daughter Hilda upstairs above the shop and yard.
He was still managing J Druitt when he opened Rodwell & Co Memorials in 1909.
He retired 1939 when he passed the Rodwell & Co to his brother in law George Lapsley who moved the yard to Leyton Road near Maryland Point Stratford, we believe that shop and yard was bombed during the Second World War then he moved it back to 542b Romford Road.
We don't know who took J Druitt Monumental Stonemasons over or when they closed for good in the 1950s.
When Richard (Dick) Gunner left the navy during the 1950s he was working for Rodwell & Co Memorials Est.1909.
Then 1965 Dick Gunner took Rodwells over.
Then 1987 he passed the rains of the family business to his son Steve Gunner.
Then 1995 Gavin, Steve's nephew did his work experience with the family business and started fulltime in 96.
Gavin took the firm over 2019 and his still running it now.
