I am Mr Ahmad Aziz an Ophthalmologist and Oculoplastic Surgeon specialising in cataract surgery, blepharoplasty and plastic surgery around the eyes including brow lift.

A really nice milestone today. I was there when my trainee performed his first cataract operation, and today I had the pleasure of being there for his 100th.

One of the most rewarding parts of being a consultant is seeing someone’s confidence, judgement and surgical skills develop over time.

Congratulations on the first 100 — hopefully many more to come!

Leaving Estoril after a few days at the 44th ESOPRS Annual Meeting 🇵🇹

One of the messages that stayed with me from this year’s meeting was the importance of restraint in eyelid surgery.

Good surgery isn’t always about doing more. Sometimes it means recognising when not to operate, preserving as much normal anatomy as possible and avoiding unnecessary intervention.

There were also some interesting discussions around surgical technique including how even small details, such as minimising retained suture material where appropriate, may help us achieve a softer, more natural result.

I was also pleased to have some of our own work in eyelid surgery presented and to spend time exchanging ideas with colleagues from across Europe.

A very worthwhile few days — with plenty to bring back into clinical practice.

This patient developed lower eyelid retraction and difficulty closing the eyes fully following bilateral lower blepharoplasty. Revision surgery was performed using bilateral canthoplasty and mucosal grafting to help restore eyelid position, improve comfort and achieve a more natural appearance.
Revision eyelid surgery is often significantly more complex than primary surgery and requires careful assessment, realistic expectations and a strong focus on both function and appearance.
