Residents crafting activities have been "out of this world" recently. To celebrate World Space Week, they created their own colourful space scenes inspired by the history of the first astronauts in space. From the moon and outer space, to astronauts and the American flag, there was a lot to include! Everyone brought their own ideas to life and had fun exploring an ‘out of this world’ theme 👩‍🚀🌎

We also held another Crafting Connection session, which happens monthly, for residents and children to connect through letters and artwork courtesy of The Together Project. This month’s theme was Autumn, and residents created colourful pictures featuring autumn leaves and tiny insects 🍁🐞

As part of the project, residents also write letters to the children, creating an ongoing friendship through their shared messages. Zia has enjoyed exchanging letters with Emma, and it has been wonderful to see the friendship developing - they were even featured in the Crafting Connections newsletter! 💌

Autumn is here... but someone forgot to tell summer ☀️🍂

The leaves might be changing, but Ian and Christopher made the most of the sunshine with a fantastic morning at Wheels for All. Both residents enjoyed the freedom of cycling around, and after a couple of laps they headed to a local pub for a drink and a good old fashioned catch-up 🚲🍻

Residents marked International Day of Peace, a day dedicated to committing to peace and stopping all violence. They share messages about peace and kindness, and their thoughtful words were added onto autumn leaves on our beautiful Tree of Peace. The messages sparked some lovely conversations about what peace means to everyone 🍁

We were also delighted to welcome children from Green Lane School for a special flower arranging activity facilitated by our lovely volunteer Gaye. With a Harvest theme, the arrangements featured many seasonal touches including flowers, apples and even potatoes. The children and residents worked together to create colourful (and slightly unusual!) arrangements 🌼🍁

There’s No Place Like Home ✨

At TWH, our activities are always about what matters most to the people taking part. Recently, we celebrated Thelma as our Resident of the Day. What made her day special was keeping things simple, just as she likes them.

Thelma prefers life without any fuss and believes in simplicity. She wore her favourite colour, pink, enjoyed classical music and spent time with her sister Marie, who came to visit. It was also Thelma’s 90th birthday, so there was even more reason to celebrate! She enjoyed a quiet afternoon with Marie and had her favourite meal of shepherd’s pie, followed by fruit crumble 🎂

We also hosted another Family & Friends Connection Session, which brought residents, families and loved ones together at TWH. It was especially nice to see families being introduced and new connections forming over the afternoon. We got creative with a pottery session, and everyone was very excited to get their hands dirty. Families and residents created all sorts of wonderful clay pieces, from pots and soup bowls to mushrooms and plenty of other imaginative creations🏺🎨

These events highlight that celebrations don’t always need to be big or elaborate - sometimes the most meaningful moments are the simplest 💛

Virtual Travel and Adventure 🌎

Residents have enjoyed exploring the world from the comfort of TWH. Deanna recently enjoyed a special virtual trip to Italy, joined by her brother, daughter, son and their partners. With boarding passes, Italian music, videos, delicious snacks and tiramisu, the family enjoyed a taste of Italy while sharing memories from Deanna’s own visits there 🇮🇹🍝

We’ve recently introduced Friday Pub Lunch, making the most of our bar and creating a relaxed space for residents to enjoy a virtual pub experience. Residents enjoyed the social and friendly atmosphere and they had a lovely time chatting, enjoying their drinks and making the most of the afternoon together. We’ll continue this new tradition every Friday, giving residents the chance to get together and have an old fashioned pub lunch 🍺

Celebrating National Day of Arts! 🎨

National Day of Arts celebrates creativity and the positive impact of the arts in care settings. Arts, Crafts and Creativity are an important part of our activities here, and there's been lots of colour and creativity happening at TWH lately. With our wonderful volunteer Sue White, residents have been busy at Knitting Club creating beautiful lavender sachets and pom-pom cats 🐱💜

Residents have also enjoyed flower arranging sessions provided by our wonderful Volunteer Gaye 💐, creating beautiful bouquets and decorating vases

…and because creativity isn't just about arts and crafts, residents also got creative in the kitchen for National Milkshake Day! They made delicious strawberry milkshakes with ice cream, milk and fresh strawberries. Everyone helped to prepare the ingredients before sitting down to enjoy their delicious refreshing shakes! 🍓

We’re finalists! ✨🏆

We are delighted to announce that TWH has been selected as a finalist in FOUR categories at the Surrey Care Association's Awards 🎉

This includes

- Team of the Year - Small/Medium Organisation
- Nursing Home of the Year
- Excellence in People & Culture

and our wonderful registered manager Ajitha Pillai is a well-deserved finalist in the ‘Outstanding Leadership in Care’ category 🏅

To be a finalist in four categories is a fantastic achievement and it recognises the teamwork and commitment shown by our staff every day.

A huge congratulations to the whole TWH team! We’re incredibly proud and excited to celebrate alongside all the other finalists 💛

Dementia Awareness and National Wellness Day 💜

We recently marked Dementia Awareness Month and with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and delicious homemade cakes while Caroline led a thoughtful discussion about Alzheimer’s and dementia. It was lovely to see our residents sharing their questions and engaging with the conversation, with a slice of cake (of course!) 🥰

We also celebrated National Wellness Day with a relaxing spa experience! Residents enjoyed face masks, soothing foot baths and gentle hand massages, with Indre, Ajitha, Fredi, Erika and Tania making sure everyone felt relaxed and cared for. Calming music, the gentle sound of a water fountain and the beautiful fragrance of jasmine created a perfect peaceful atmosphere. 🌸

They have been really lovely days, filled with awareness, relaxation, laughter, conversation and plenty of well-deserved self-care.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! 💃🇪🇸

What a wonderful afternoon our residents had celebrating Spanish Heritage Month with fun-filled Spanish-themed activities!

Hispanic Heritage Month celebrates the rich cultures, histories and contributions of people with roots in Spain, Mexico, Central, South America, and the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The celebration began in the United States as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and was later expanded to a month-long celebration.

Our afternoon was packed with entertainment! Tomasz and Kelvin brought plenty of laughs with their Matador and Bull performance, Elsa delighted everyone with a beautiful Bachata dance, and Tania and Christopher showed off some lively salsa steps. 💃🕺

Residents also enjoyed Spanish-inspired dress-up with traditional costume and red roses, a fun trivia quiz, beautiful scenes of Madrid, Spanish music and a wonderful flamenco performance. 🎶🌹

It was a joyful afternoon celebrating Hispanic culture and heritage, and our residents thoroughly enjoyed joining in! 💜

Family and Friends Funday! 🤩

Our beautiful front courtyard was transformed into the perfect setting for a very special celebration last week. With the marquees up and the sun shining, residents, families and friends came together for an afternoon filled with fun, laughter, delicious food and togetherness. ☀️🎉

The wonderful The Little Sherwood Farm Experience supported by Karina, brought along sheep, goats, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs and adorable puppies for our residents to meet, stroke and feed. Some even made special visits to residents in their rooms. Kevin was thrilled to cuddle a guinea pig and a tiny baby Rabbit, his smile said it all! 🥰🐇

The animal visit was just part of a fantastic afternoon, where guests enjoyed a delicious barbecue, tombola, cake stand and refreshments and our fabulous entertainer Hayley had everyone singing and dancing, with Maurice Singing along and Christopher, Zia, Esme and Thelma taking to the dance floor! 💃🕺

A wonderful afternoon filled with smiles and Laughter. Thank you to everyone who made it so special, we can't wait to do it all again soon! 💜🥰

Wellness and Wagging Tails! 🐶🧘‍♀️

We’ve enjoyed some wonderful Sensory and Namaste Sessions this month with stimulation, reminiscence, cognitive engagement, gentle movement and meaningful social connection through our therapeutic activities.

Our Namaste themes have included “Memorable Words,” and “The Beauty of Light,” Residents have enjoyed hand massages, scented oils, colourful lights, puzzles, memory cards and gentle physiotherapy exercises. These activities encouraged residents to stimulate their senses, practice concentration and recall, develop fine motor skills and express themselves through touch, movement and conversation. 🧠🤲✨

Our therapeutic theme continued with National Dog Day and we were thrilled when Caroline brought in her six-month-old puppy, Buddy to visit, our residents were delighted to spend time with him, enjoying cuddles and taking photographs together. Residents enjoyed sharing stories about dogs they had owned and the conversations created wonderful opportunities for reminiscence therapy, helping residents connect with personal memories and experiences while enjoying the comfort and companionship that animals can bring. 🐾🐶

Across all our activities, the focus has been on creating sensory awareness, emotional wellbeing and meaningful engagement but most importantly, our sessions gave everyone the opportunity to connect, smile, reminisce and simply enjoy being together. 💜
