You cannot be intimate with a category.

When understanding becomes a substitute for encounter.

You cannot be intimate with a category.

A label can be an act of mercy.
It can explain why life has been harder than it looked from the outside.
It can give words to confusion, shame, or years of feeling like a private failure.

But there is a moment when the language that once brought relief starts to sit between two people.
We begin speaking as diagnoses and patterns instead of as ourselves:

“I’m avoidant.”
“This is my trauma.”
“This is my autism.”

None of those sentences are necessarily wrong.
But I sit with couples who can describe each other beautifully and still not be able to reach each other at all.

The label may explain the wound.
It cannot do the work of love.

If this touches something in you, you’re not alone.

I’m a psychotherapist working with conscious relationships.
I offer workshops, couples therapy, retreats, and intensives.

We talk a lot about “doing the work”.
But often, what gets celebrated is the experience – the retreat, the catharsis, the big release.

What I’m interested in is what happens after.

Lately I’ve been meeting a lot of people who arrive with beautiful language – somatic, trauma‑informed, regulation, window of tolerance – and yet carry a quiet sense that something didn’t feel right in the rooms that promised transformation.

The words were there.
The techniques were there.
But their body felt pushed, not met.

Over the years I’ve become less interested in peak states and more interested in integration:

Can your nervous system hold a little more truth without collapsing?

Can you feel without disappearing?

Can you stay present in real relationships without performing being “okay”?

Sometimes the most trauma‑informed thing in the room is not a technique at all, but a person who will stay with you at your actual pace.

That’s the work this new piece is about.

If you’ve ever left a “somatic” or “trauma‑informed” space feeling more alone in your body than before, you can read it here,

On somatic healing, trauma-informed practice, and why intensity is not transformation.

More often, something quieter happens.
The conversations become practical. The laughter becomes less available. You find yourselves talking about the children, the shopping, the diary, but somehow not really finding each other.
Many couples tell me, "Nothing terrible has happened. We just don't feel like us anymore."
I've written a new piece exploring three patterns that quietly erode intimacy and connection over time.
Perhaps you'll recognise some of it.

Every year the bluebells return, as if from another world.
A quiet, shimmering reminder that something ancient and magical is still moving beneath the surface of our lives.

When I stand besides them, I notice how my system softens.
The chatter of who I should be falls away, and what is left is a simple, living presence, the earth breathing, my body breathing, something in me remembering deeply.

This is how inner transformation begins.
Not as a dramatic breakthrough or a brand new self, but as a subtle shift in the field around and within us a feeling of being a little more here, a little less distant, a little more willing to be touched by beauty.

bluebells don’t try to become anything other than themselves.
They open, in differing rhythms, together, and let their colour and scent work quietly on whoever is willing to slow down and notice.

What happens in you when you let yourself really receive this kind of beauty?

My wish is that you become more of who you truly are.
If you pause with these bluebells for a moment, notice which part of your inner magic begins to stir?
