KidneyWise Hello! We created this page to share trustworthy and practical information about diet and kidney disease.

We are Lina and Nevine, two registered dietitians from the UK & the co-founders of KidneyWise, helping people with CKD Stage 3 and 4 with diet and lifestyle advice.

💻 "I thought the answers would be on Google."

When Rod was diagnosed with CKD, he did what so many people do.

🔎 He searched online, hoping to find clear answers about what he should eat to protect his kidneys.

Instead, he found conflicting advice, information overload and more questions than answers. 😕

After working with KidneyWise, this is what he had to say:

💬 "Fortunately for me, this can be found via KidneyWise, run by two experienced and qualified NHS renal dietitians who provide the time, space and measured judgement to help you see a way forward."

💬 "They give you the opportunity to discuss your concerns and fears and respond with practical advice based on professional experience and research."

One part of Rod's feedback particularly resonated with us:

💬 "Certainly, if you are at the early stages of CKD, there is no way you will be able to access such expertise on the NHS."

Sadly, this reflects the experience of many people we speak to. Specialist kidney dietetic support in the early stages of CKD isn't routinely available, leaving many people trying to make sense of their diagnosis on their own. 🤍

That's why we created KidneyWise.

To give people with CKD Stages 3 and 4 access to specialist, evidence-based nutrition support before they reach the later stages of kidney disease. 🥗

Thank you, Rod, for sharing your experience. 💚

If you've recently been diagnosed with CKD and would like personalised guidance from specialist kidney dietitians, we'd love to help.

One of the biggest challenges we hear from people living with CKD isn't making dietary changes. 🥗

It's knowing which advice to believe. 🤔

When you search online for information about chronic kidney disease, you'll find thousands of articles, videos and social media posts.

Some are excellent. ✅

Some are well-intentioned.

But one thing is often missing...

Context. 🔍

Nutrition advice for CKD isn't one-size-fits-all. It should take into account your stage of kidney disease, your blood test results, your medications, what you currently eat and any other health conditions you may have. 🩺

That's why, at KidneyWise, we focus exclusively on supporting people with CKD Stages 3 and 4. 💙

Between us, we have more than 40 years of specialist kidney dietetic experience; we've helped thousands of people living with CKD, and we're passionate about turning confusing nutrition advice into practical steps you can actually use. 🥦

We're also firm believers that managing CKD shouldn't be driven by fear. 💛

You don't need endless lists of foods to avoid.

You need clear, evidence-based advice that's tailored to you. ✅

What's one question about diet and CKD you'd love us to answer? 💬

Leave it in the comments. 👇 It could inspire one of our next posts. ✨

💭 "I'm trying to follow a kidney diet... and a diabetes diet. It feels impossible."

This is something we hear regularly in our consultations.

🍞 People are often told to reduce carbohydrates to help manage their blood sugar. Then they read online that they should be careful with protein to protect their kidneys.

Before long, they're left wondering what's actually safe to eat. 😕

The reality is that managing CKD and diabetes doesn't mean following two completely separate diets.

In fact, many of the healthy eating principles overlap. ✅ The challenge is knowing which advice applies to you rather than trying to follow generic lists from the internet.

That's where so much of the confusion comes from.

📖 In our latest blog, we explain:
- Why kidney and diabetes advice can seem contradictory
- The foods people often avoid unnecessarily
- How to build balanced meals that support both your kidneys and your blood sugar
- Simple, practical changes that can make eating feel much less overwhelming

💚 Our goal isn't to give you another list of foods to avoid. It's to help you understand what matters most, so you can feel more confident every time you sit down to eat.

💭 “What does any of this actually mean?”

It’s a story we hear all too often.

📱 You receive a message telling you that your blood results are ready. You see an eGFR that’s dropping or a creatinine level that’s highlighted, but no one explains what it means or what you should do next.

That’s exactly why we created our free guide. 📘✨

🌱 Plant-based eating has many potential benefits for people living with chronic kidney disease.

But here’s something that’s often overlooked... 👀

Not all plant-based foods are created equal.

Many people assume that because a product is labelled “plant-based”, it must be good for their kidneys.

In reality, some meat alternatives, such as veggie burgers, veggie sausages and other plant-based convenience foods, can still be high in salt and highly processed. ⚠️

Instead, try making whole plant foods the stars of your meals more often, such as:

🫘 Beans and lentils
🌱 Chickpeas
🍽️ Tofu
🌾 Wholegrains like oats and brown rice
🍎 Fruit and vegetables
🥜 Unsalted nuts and seeds

We’re sharing one of our blog posts that explains what a plant-based diet really means for CKD, the benefits it may offer and simple ways to include more plant foods without feeling overwhelmed. 💚

🥑 It’s National Avocado Day, so let’s talk about one of the most popular foods when it comes to healthy eating.

Avocados have certainly earned their reputation as a nutritious food.

They’re packed with:

💚 Heart-healthy unsaturated fats
🌿 Fibre to support gut health
✨ Powerful antioxidants
🍊 Vitamins C and E, which support healthy hair and skin

They’re also incredibly versatile:

🍞 Mashed on toast
🥗 Added to salads
🥣 Blended into dips
🌯 Sliced into sandwiches and wraps

But, as with many foods, whether avocado is right for you depends on your individual circumstances.

⚠️ If you’ve been advised to follow a low-potassium diet, avocado may need to be limited because it contains a relatively high amount of potassium.

And if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s worth remembering that avocados are higher in calories than many other fruits and vegetables because of their fat content, so be mindful of portion sizes.

This is why we rarely think of foods as simply “good” or “bad”.

The best food choices are the ones that are right for you. 💚

Do you eat avocado?

Let us know your favourite way to enjoy it below. 👇

If you're living with Stage 4 CKD, you may have started to notice more symptoms than you used to. 💙

While many people in the earlier stages of CKD have few or no symptoms, symptoms can become more noticeable as kidney function declines.

Some of the symptoms people commonly report include:

• Feeling tired or weak 😴
• Difficulty sleeping 🌙
• Dry or itchy skin
• Changes in urine 🚽
• Shortness of breath
• Muscle cramps
• Swelling in the feet, ankles or hands 🦶
• Changes in taste 👅

Not everyone experiences the same symptoms.

And some people may have very few symptoms despite having Stage 4 CKD.

That’s one reason why CKD can feel so confusing. 💭

It’s also important to remember that these symptoms can have other causes too, so it’s always worth discussing any new or worsening symptoms with your healthcare team. 👩‍⚕️

One thing we hear regularly is that people feel relieved when they realise they’re not the only ones experiencing these changes. 🤝

Sometimes, simply knowing that others understand can make a difficult day feel a little easier.

You don’t have to carry these worries alone. 💚

If you’ve noticed some of these symptoms at Stage 4 CKD, feel free to share below. You may help someone else feel less alone too. 💬

One of the saddest things we hear from people with CKD is that they’ve started avoiding meals out because they’re worried about making the wrong food choice. 😔🍽️

They spend the evening analysing the menu.

Comparing options. 🔍

Second-guessing every decision.

And sometimes feeling guilty about what they ordered afterwards. 💭

If that’s happened to you, please know you’re not alone. 💙

Many people with CKD feel anxious about eating out, especially when they’ve been given a lot of dietary advice or are trying hard to protect their kidney health.

But here’s something worth remembering. 👇

Your kidney health isn’t determined by a single restaurant meal.

It’s shaped by your habits and choices over weeks, months and years. 📅

That doesn’t mean food choices don’t matter.

It simply means there is room for flexibility. 🌿

Room for social occasions. 🥂

Room to enjoy a meal with people you care about. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦❤️

Because protecting your kidneys shouldn’t mean putting your life on hold.

Have you ever felt anxious about eating out with CKD? 💬

We’d love to know what you find most challenging.

One thing we notice time and time again is that people often find healthy eating for CKD difficult because of the constant decision-making around what to eat each day, which can feel exhausting. 😩

What should I eat? 🤔

What should I buy?

Do I have the right ingredients? 🥗

When you're asking yourself these questions several times a day, it's no surprise that eating starts to feel stressful.

This is where a simple meal plan can make a huge difference. 📝✨

Not a complicated spreadsheet.

Not seven days of perfectly planned, different meals.

Just a rough plan for the week ahead. 📅

🥣 A couple of breakfast options on rotation
🥪 Some sandwich or salad lunch ideas
🍲 A few quick midweek dinner ideas
🛒 A shopping list
🥕 Some ingredients ready to go

That's often enough to remove a huge amount of mental load and make healthy choices feel easier. 💚

Many of our clients tell us that meal planning is one of the habits that helps them feel more organised, more confident, and less overwhelmed with food. 🙌

Because when you've already made the decision once, you don't have to keep making it every day.

Do you meal plan for the week? 👇

Many people assume that what causes the most stress after a CKD diagnosis is the diagnosis itself. 🩺

Often, it’s the uncertainty. 🤔

Not knowing what your blood results mean. 🧪
Not knowing whether a change is significant. 📊
Not knowing what questions to ask. ❓

When the numbers don’t make sense, your mind naturally fills in the gaps.

That’s when worry tends to grow. 😟

Understanding your kidney blood test results won’t give you all the answers.

But it can help you feel more informed, more confident, and more prepared for conversations with your healthcare team. 💬✨

That’s why we created CKD Results Made Simple. 📘

It’s designed to help you understand some of the most common kidney blood tests in plain English, without the medical jargon or overwhelm. 🙌

Because when you understand your results, it’s easier to focus on what matters and stop guessing. 💙
