Huge congratulations to my lovely friend, Rhiannon, on the launch of The Fibre Formula 📙🌱

It's always such a privilege to celebrate with you and the team 🩷

Fibre is one of the most overlooked parts of our diet, yet it plays such a huge role in supporting gut health, blood sugar balance, heart health and keeping us fuller for longer. Shockingly, around 96% of people in the UK aren't meeting the recommended 30g of fibre per day, with the average intake sitting at roughly half of what we need.

That gap matters. Low fibre diets are linked to a higher risk of chronic conditions including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and colon cancer - a disease that is unfortunately rising, particularly in younger adults.

Books like this are so important in helping people understand the power of simple, everyday changes to their diet. So if you’re looking for practical, science-backed ways to boost your fibre intake, this is such a brilliant place to start.

I'm now off to raid my goody bag and read my copy on the train home 🥳

I said what I said. 💯

I’m incredibly honoured to have received an Academic Achievement Award from Bournemouth University’s Faculty of Health & Social Sciences for my MSc in Nutrition & Behaviour.

Balancing postgraduate study with everything life has to offer has been one of the most challenging — and rewarding — chapters. To have this dedication recognised means so much. 🎉

A huge thank you to my incredible lecturers (you know who you are!), peers, and friends and family who have supported me during this 4 year journey. I've equally loved and hated every minute 😂

Looking forward to continuing to grow as both a health professional and researcher.

Thank you, BU!

🍞 Should I cut carbs to lose weight? Let’s break down the science (not just the trends).

Carbohydrates have become the scapegoat for weight gain – but cutting them out completely often does more harm than good.

🔍 Not all carbs are equal.
There’s a huge difference between refined carbs (think pastries, sugary cereals, white bread) and complex, fibre-rich carbs like oats, legumes, wholegrains, fruit, and vegetables. While reducing refined carbs can support blood glucose control and appetite regulation, eliminating all carbs strips your diet of essential nutrients.

🥦 Carbs = fibre = gut health.
Many carbs are our main source of dietary fibre, which is essential for digestion, satiety, blood sugar control, and gut microbiome diversity. When you reduce fibre, you may experience irregular digestion, poor appetite regulation, and inflammation over time.

🧠 Your brain runs on glucose.
Carbs are the brain’s preferred fuel. Chronically low carb intake can lead to poor focus, low energy, irritability, and even mood dips. Serotonin, our 'feel good' neurotransmitter, relies on adequate carbohydrate intake to help tryptophan cross the blood-brain barrier. This is why low-carb diets are often linked to low mood.

🙂 Low carb ≠ low energy? Think again.
People following ketogenic diets sometimes experience fatigue, especially in the early stages, as the body shifts into ketosis. While some may adapt, this approach isn’t sustainable or suitable for everyone – and can be hard to maintain socially, emotionally, and nutritionally.

🥗 So how much carbohydrate should I eat?
In a balanced plate, around 1/3 should come from complex carbs (wholegrains, potatoes, legumes). Combined with protein, healthy fats, and fibre-rich veg, this supports satiety, energy levels, and long-term weight management without the crash-diet cycle.

⚖️ You don’t need to fear carbs to manage your weight.
Long-term weight management is best achieved by improving diet quality, supporting metabolic health, and making sustainable behaviour changes.

Perimenopause is the transition before menopause when estrogen and progesterone levels change. Leading to uncomfortable symptoms including irregular periods, hot flushes, brain fog.

There is evidence that food can relieve symptoms of perimenopause, in particular evidence suggests that consuming foods known as phytoestrogens can ease symptoms of estrogen decline through mimicking the role of estrogen in the body.

Phytoestrogen foods include;
Soy beans and edamame 🫛
Tofu
Flax seeds
Chickpeas
Fruits and vegetables! 🌽 🍆

…just to name a few!

We could also talk about fibre all day, but we are going to save that for another post, so keep your 👀 peeled!
