I share my three essential criteria for selecting toys that boost children’s speech and language development!

🗣️high-quality, durable toys that can withstand rough play
🗣️toys with multiple parts that provide opportunities to discuss shapes, colors, sizes, and actions
🗣️ versatile toys that can be played with in different way.

Toys that fit this bill…
- mr potato head
- role play toys
- Lovevery play kits
- duplo
- post box games

Lovevery kindly gifted one of their kits for me to test out, and I really love what was inside. They have given us a £20 discount code for first time subscribers to their play kits: LOVESWSPEECHTHERAPY20europe

Save this now/ send to your other half to make sure you don’t forget to book a hearing test for your little one.

I suggest this for 2 reasons…
1. Hearing has a significant impact on speech & language development.
2. You sometimes need an up to date hearing test to access other services (such as speech therapy).

Get on the phone to your GP and request a hearing test for your little one ❤️

I have to admit, I needed a LOT of time to come down from watching the Louis Theroux doc, and I was left with such a feeling of sadness. Perhaps though we can use this knowledge to make sure we support all children now with kindness, critical thinking and community? What are your thoughts? ❤️

These are the mistakes even I make when modelling language!
We can all fall into habits with the way we use language, and while repetition is really important, so is variety! The 2 types of words we often forget to model are adjectives (descriptive words) and verbs (action words).

If you think about your language use around your child, you probably name things “car”, “dog”, “mummy” but we often forget to talk about the other categories of words (action words and descriptive words) “jumping”, “sliding”, “spotty”, “stripey”.

So this week, have a look at how you’re using language to model words for your child and see if you can add in some of those other categories of words for them ❤️

A few things to think about when you have your first Speech & Language Therapy Appointment ❤️ parents who have been there, done that - what should we add to the list?

This is rocket fuel for children who are learning to talk 🚀

Repetition of language across different activities and in different contexts allows that language to embed and your child to get a rounded understanding of what that words means. Hearing it multiple times also means they’re more likely to say it!

Many parents don’t realise that they can make this simple tweak to story time and as a result “teach” their child so many more words! 📖📚

Now of course part of the joy of story time is the connection and lovely cuddle you both enjoy when your child is happily sat on your lap listening to you read. I’m not suggesting you stop that, but add in some story-times when you turn your child around so they’re sat facing you and put the book in the middle. This allows your child to see your mouth while you read which is supportive for developing new words. You’re also teaching them about how to share attention and developing their emotional intelligence (think about all that we express through our facial expression!).

Give this a go next time you read to your child, and please let me know what story time tweaks you have that make it more enjoyable or powerful for your child ❤️

When I first started my “clinic journey!” I rented a room in the back of a health food shop.
It wasn’t ideal, but it was affordable and it allowed me to offer so much more as a therapist! Plus it saved me time and money (I don’t want to talk about the number of parking tickets I have had! 🙈)

It has taken over 2 years to get to the point I am at now with our own dedicated therapy space, and I now have the opportunity to share the space with likeminded health and education professionals!

Drop me a message if you would like more info & hopefully I’ll see you in clinic soon 🥰✨
