Watching the eclipse together ☀️
The eclipse is a magical opportunity to explore, wonder and learn together. Here are some simple ways to support your child’s language while you watch
✨ Talk about what you can see – “the sky is getting darker”, “look the sun is changing shape”, “wow so bright!”
✨ Use new words – eclipse, shadow, moon sun, light, dark, in front. Repeat these in sentences.
✨ Encourage questions – “what do you think will happen next?” “why do you think that?”
✨ Share how it feels – ‘it’s exciting’, ‘how amazing’.
✨ Extend the experience – read books, draw what you saw or make a collage of the sun and moon. Tell others about what you saw.
✨ Follow their interests. If they’re fascinated by the glasses, shadows or darkness, talk about that. Even if it’s the snacks you brought with you! Language develops best when children are engaged in something they genuinely enjoy.
You don’t need to turn an eclipse into a language lesson. Just enjoy it together, talk about what you notice, follow your child’s lead and add a little more language to what they’re already saying 🌒
