11 October is International Day of the Girl. Around 1900, women were about 1% of doctors in the UK. In 2025 they became the majority of licensed doctors for the first time, according to the GMC. Many girls at school today will become the midwives, sonographers, doctors and scientists who look after women and babies in future. Encouraging that interest early, at home and at school, really matters.

10 October is World Mental Health Day. Mental health during pregnancy and after birth is as much a part of maternity care as blood pressure checks or scans. As many as 1 in 4 women experience a perinatal mental health condition. If you are struggling, please speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP. These conditions are treatable. Thank you to the perinatal mental health teams who support women and families every day.

This week is Baby Loss Awareness Week (9โ€“15 October). Of babies born in the UK in 2024, more than 3,000 were stillborn or died in their first four weeks, and around 15 in every 100 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Each of those losses matters. Sands and Tommy's both offer reliable information and support for families. I would also like to thank the bereavement midwives and neonatal teams who care for families with such skill.

Maternal vaccination is changing rapidly, and the next few years could transform how we protect women and babies.

This Thursday, I'm delighted to launch a major new six-paper Series in Lancet Regional Health โ€“ Europe on the future of maternal vaccination.

Maternal vaccination has enormous potential to protect both women and their babies from serious infectious diseases, particularly in those vulnerable first months of life. But that potential is not yet being fully realised.

That's why the Series calls for a coordinated European approach to maternal immunisation, built on:

๐Ÿ”น Better integration into antenatal care
๐Ÿ”น Stronger surveillance
๐Ÿ”น A clear focus on equity

๐Ÿ“ We'll be unveiling the Series at the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine 2026 Global Congress:

๐Ÿ—“ Thursday 8 October ยท 13:00โ€“14:00 CEST
๐Ÿ› Beatrix Theatre Hall, Utrecht

If you're attending, please join us for the launch and discussion. I hope to see you there.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A reminder for anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding: breasts change a lot during this time, and most lumps turn out not to be cancer. But a new lump, ni**le discharge or change in the skin of the breast should be checked by your GP or midwife, not simply put down to pregnancy.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. In the UK and Ireland, around 1 in 1,000 babies develops GBS infection in the first three months of life. Each year it kills about 50 babies, and around 70 more survive with long-term disability.

There is currently no licensed GBS vaccine. GBS Vaccine trials in pregnancy have started worldwide.

Healthy pregnant women aged 49 or under may be eligible to join between 24 and 36 weeks. Participants receive one injection, either the vaccine or a saline placebo, allocated at random. Black and Asian women are particularly encouraged to take part, as GBS disproportionately affects Black and Asian babies.

Trials like this depend on women choosing to take part. Details and eligibility: https://bepartofresearch.nihr.ac.uk/trial-details/trial-detail?trialId=59084

Allergies or a complex pregnancy do not always mean you need to avoid vaccination.
Common allergies are usually not a problem, but always tell your healthcare team if you have had anaphylaxis, a severe vaccine reaction, or an allergy to a vaccine ingredient.

A high-risk pregnancy usually means a conversation โ€” not automatic avoidance.

Alongside brilliant colleagues, we explored fetal facial assessment through live scanning, bringing theory into a practical clinical setting and demonstrating approaches to assessing fetal dysmorphology.

Practical sessions like these really bring theory to life โ€” creating opportunities to learn from one another, ask questions and translate knowledge into clinical practice.

It was wonderful to see the session so well received by such an engaged and inquisitive audience. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the discussion, and to ISUOG for creating such an excellent environment for practical learning and knowledge exchange.

Absolutely delighted that our work from the FERN Study was recognised at the ISUOG World Congress 2026 in London, receiving the Best Oral Communication in its category award.

Our presentation, โ€œPredictors of intact survival of both twins in early-onset fetal growth restriction in monochorionic twin pregnancies: prospective multicenter study,โ€ shares findings from the FERN Study โ€” research focused on one of the most challenging complications affecting monochorionic twin pregnancies.

Selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) is associated with significant risks for both babies, particularly when it develops before 24 weeks. Yet there remains limited evidence to guide clinicians and families when making difficult decisions about management.

FERN is a prospective UK multicentre study involving 22 NHS fetal medicine units, examining the natural history, management and outcomes of early-onset sFGR and exploring the feasibility of a future trial comparing active intervention with expectant management.

This award reflects the work of a much wider team. I would like to thank all of the researchers, clinicians, collaborators and participating centres whose commitment has made the study possible, and especially the women and families who have contributed to this important research.

A particular thank you to the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) for funding the FERN Study, and to our partners Twins Trust and Liverpool Womenโ€™s NHS Foundation Trust for their invaluable support and collaboration.

Thank you also to ISUOG and the Scientific Committee for recognising our work. I hope this research will help strengthen the evidence available to clinicians and families and contribute towards better outcomes for monochorionic twin pregnancies affected by sFGR.
