Older adults often don't feel thirsty until they're already dehydrated, which is why telling them to drink more rarely works.

Making it easy, and easy to spot, tends to do more.

Frozen fruit juice in an ice cube tray. Drop a few into a glass of squash through the day, slowly melting, gently topping it up.

Slices of watermelon, cucumber, or orange in a bowl in the fridge. Easier to reach for than a drink, and they count.

A jug on the side, refilled at breakfast. Knowing how much is left by lunchtime tells you more than asking ever will.

💚 IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO CARE — AND SOMETIMES, THAT VILLAGE SAVES A LIFE.

Today was a powerful reminder of what outstanding domiciliary care truly means.

A Home Instead Care Professional arrived for a scheduled visit to support an older person.

There was no answer.

She knocked again.
She called his name.
Still nothing.

She could have assumed he wasn’t home.

She didn’t.

She looked through the window and saw him lying helplessly on the floor.

From that moment, every minute mattered.

She raised the alarm, contacted 999 and the office, found a neighbour who held a spare key and gained access to make sure he wasn’t alone.

The ambulance arrived.

The paramedics discovered that his blood sugar was dangerously low, and he was taken to hospital for further assessment and treatment.

💚 This is Home Instead Outstanding Domiciliary Care.

Care isn’t simply completing a scheduled visit.

It is knowing when something isn’t right.

It is noticing the silence behind a closed door.

It is refusing to walk away.

It is neighbours, Care Professionals, office teams and emergency services working together when somebody needs them most.

And at the centre of everything is an older person whose life, safety and dignity matter.
