Last week, we shared the news about our new study which showed focal therapy could effectively treat prostate cancer. Here we share a patient's lived experience of receiving focal therapy πŸ‘‡πŸΌ

Dean, who is 53 years old from Birmingham, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2025. He explains: "I went to my GP surgery and they did a PSA test – and found my level was high, despite the fact I had no symptoms. I was referred to my local hospital for more tests.”

Further tests confirmed he had prostate cancer and he initially agreed to have radiotherapy with hormone therapy.

Dean then found out about focal therapy thanks to the charity Prost8UK and returned to his GP to request a referral to Charing Cross Hospital. The Imperial team decided he was a candidate for a focal therapy called cryotherapy – which freezes the tumour.

"My support group were so helpful to help me make the decision to have focal therapy,” says Dean. β€œIn the end it was a no brainer – I opted for focal therapy as it is less invasive, and it was much faster.”

Dean had the operation on 5 March 2026. β€œI was in and out of hospital in one day – I travelled to the hospital in the morning, I had cryotherapy in the early afternoon,” explains Dean. β€œThe whole procedure in theatre was only 1-1.5 hours and I went home later that day. The whole procedure was pretty quick.”

β€œI am doing very well, my recovery was pretty quick. I am so thankful. My care at Imperial was second to none. If I hadn’t had the information from Prost8 I would never have known focal therapy was an option."

🚨 NEW PUBLICATION IN European Urology 🚨

We are pleased to share the largest and longest-term analysis of focal therapy by Imperial Prostate and UK colleagues, reporting 10-year outcomes after focal HIFU and cryotherapy in 3477 men at 14 UK hospitals, led by Alexander Light, Max Peters, Hashim U. Ahmed, and Taimur Shah.

48% of our cohort had unfavourable-intermediate- or high-risk disease at baseline. At 10 years we found:
πŸ”Ή 99.9% had not died from their cancer
πŸ”Ή 96.7% were free from metastasis

Based on our data, focal therapy could be considered as a first-line treatment for well-selected cases of non-metastatic prostate cancer alongside radical treatment. With the UK government's recent Β£2.8 million investment into focal therapy, we hope this will translate to more men being able to access this effective treatment across the country.
