Where do people get their fibre from?

For most people the answer is vegetables, brown bread, bran cereals.
And it's true: All of these do provide fibre.

But it's unlikely enough. The recommended amount of fibre is 30g per day but equally important is to have a broad range of fibre rich foods.

Because when it comes to fibre, diversity matters just as much as quantity.

Different fibres do different jobs in the gut and the body. The more variety you eat, the more benefits you get.

So here is simple rule of thumb to get there:

🌾 3 portions of wholegrains (cereals, wholegrain bread, oats, brown rice, wholemeal pasta)
🥦 5 portions of fruit and vegetables (keeping the skin on when possible)
🫘 1 portion of legumes (lentils, chickpeas, beans)
🥜 1 portion of nuts and seeds

This combination delivers a good balance of both fibre quantity and fibre diversity.

Give it a go and let me know how you're doing.

For too long fibre has suffered from bad PR!

When you ask people why fibre is important, people think:'To keep regular', ' to help with constipation'… Not very sexy!

But what if I told you it can:
🍽️ Regulate appetite
🫀 Reduce cholesterol
🩸improve blood glucose response
🎗️ Help protect against certain cancers
🦠 Support a healthy gut microbiome
🧠Potentially support mood and anxiety

Suddenly fibre sounds far more appealing, right?

And when 1 out of 20 adults in the UK isn't getting enough, that should make most of us curious about how to get more of it.

I have loads of resources on fibre (link to my website in bio) and will share more over the coming weeks.

Marketing – and food shelves – would make you believe we’re all at risk of protein deficiency.
But that’s not what the data shows.

What we’re actually lacking are plant-based foods, fruit and vegetables, and dietary fibre.
The latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that the average adult in the UK already meets protein requirements, while:
⚠️only 1 in 5 meet 5-a-day
⚠️only 1 in 20 reach fibre recommendations

Protein matters, yes.
But for most people, it’s not the missing piece.

If we shifted even a fraction of the protein hype towards:
🫘beans, lentils and pulses
🌾wholegrains
🥜nuts and seeds
🥦vegetables and fruit
we’d likely see a much bigger public health win.
