Just a question. An idea, in fact. What if it wasn’t true? What if you’re not the worst person in the world? What if, maybe, everyone doesn’t hate you? What would you do differently? How would feel? How would you act?

Think about it.

How many times does someone ask “how’s it going” and you respond “yeah, good, thanks” (your day, your work, your hobby, your therapy appointments)… we’re so using to saying we’re good and then moving on.

Therapy could be making a lot of things easier. it could also mean that things are a little harder at the moment, too. Asking about this can start a conversation around how someone could be supported, or even allow them to talk about the impact it is having on their life (the stuff that’s easier and the stuff that’s currently a bit more difficult). It’s OK if someone still says ‘nah, i’m good’; that means they don’t want to talk about it, which is fine. But these kind of questions can also open up a judgement-free conversation, if they would like to talk.

Is there anything you wish people asked you, during therapy?

Yesterday I had the privilege of working with Unmind & talking about practical steps for Facing your fears and breaking the anxiety cycle.

Nowadays when we talk about anxiety, most people are thinking of anxiety disorders. But anxiety is a normal human emotion. If something makes us feel anxious — like parties, public speaking or job interviews — we might decide to avoid it altogether. This gets rid of the nerves in the short term. But science tells us that it’ll only make us feel more anxious in the long run.

Ever felt super nervous for something, but when it’s done, you feel relieved? When we face our fears, we learn that the thing we feared is safe after all. And the more we do it, the more we can keep on doing it.

We talked about:
- The science of anxiety
- Why we instinctively avoid things that make us anxious
- What happens (scientifically) when we start to face our fears
- Practical steps for breaking the anxiety cycle & facing our fears.

What's even better, is that the wonderful bunch at Unmind live-streamed the workshop and you can watch the whole thing on YouTube, for free! I absolutely love working with people who work towards making mental health information accessible to everyone.

So have a watch, share with anyone who you think will find this useful! Let me know if anything resonated with you, or if there's anything you want to know more about. I loved every second and would love to share more mental health training, like this, if it will be beneficial!
